Subject: Is The 2005 Dakota 4*4, 4.7L Reliable?
IP: Logged

Message:
Looking at purchasing a 2005 Dakota 4 by 4 with the 4.7L engine with 37000 miles. How is the track record on this vehicle for reliability and inherent problems? The carfax report has two entries of manufacture repurchase due to lemon law. Dealer said this is a common entry when vehicle is retitled. Is this true? I know the gas mileage is poor with this engine, right? How is the tranny?
Thanks, Michael

According the an artical on "TruckTrend Magazine" the 4th generation wasn't as reliable as the previous generations. So that said, check out the Ram. Brakes and balljoints seem to be the major issues with the '05 though 08 modles.

And I still refur the Ram as a Dodge.

Hope this helps.

I would call any cross pin grill a Dodge especially if it's got a Dodge emblem on the hood. But I think it was stupid to make the Ram it's very own brand. Why not come out with the Caravan brand also??

I’ll tell you something that would make more since. Resurrect the Eagle brand making a comeback for small fuel efficient cars such as hybrids that can meet 40 mile per gallon standards.

I now have 105600 miles on mine bought new. The water pump went at 100,000 so bank on about $500 for that repair. Full brake job done also about 80,000.

Gas mileage with mostly highway is 16 to 17. Mobil 1 oil used exclusively.

From my understanding they went to larger brakes as the years went my for the Gen truck. But I don't think that made a big dent in reliability in reguards to the brakes.

Also watch out for the Catalytic system. Acording the the article on T.T Magazine; they don't stay under your truck for long due to a short life span. I guess there made in China to.

@ Super.S

Agree! Chrysler needs another division besides the New Ram brand which was ridiculous to start. with.

It’s the way the position the Gen 4 trucks Vs the competition was the main problem. The arseholes at Dodge never did intend the truck to be as much of a stand out like the Gen 1,2,3 was since they was great sellers and also raised the bar in what a smaller truck should be. The excuse that Chrysler used was that it might interfere with sells of the larger Ram. That was BS.

So now it’s being axed out of production (with more people losing there job) on the count of such BS logic.

Well, I hope you like the idea of a unibody frame truck based on what Fiat fells what the next Dakota or Mini Ram should be.
