Message: Today I went and test drove a 1998 Dakota 5.2 with a
PT/FT and 4Lo transfer case to possibly purchase. From what I've
learned, the PT and the FT setting ARE shift on the fly correct?
The only thing that you have to stop the truck and shift the truck
into neutral for is 4Lo right?
I was positive I did this right and I tested all the settings to
make sure they all worked. First, I slowed the truck to about 5
MPH
then I shifted it into PT. The light came on, I drove forward
about 20 more feet and I assumed all was well. Then I shifted
the truck into FT, the light came on, I drove 20 more feet, and I
felt it engage, all was still well. Then I stopped the truck, put
the transmission in neutral, put the transfer case in neutral,
then put the transfer case into 4Lo. I then put the truck in drive
and drove about 20 feet or so and I definitely felt the 4Lo
working. I then stopped the truck again, put it in Neutral, then
shifted the truck back into 4FT, and then put the truck in drive.
It moved as normal in 4FT and then at about 20 ft I put it back
into 2wd (This was all below 15 MPH). I then drove it back to the
guy's house with no
problems and it was definitely in 2wd when I got there because
it felt exactly the same as when I left.
So I got this phone call later on that night saying that I messed
up
his transfer case somehow and the wheels are locked up and the
truck is pulling to the right. Do you think this guy is scamming
me? Or did I really do something wrong with the transfer case
engaging and disengaging process? I was pretty confident that I
didn't do anything considering I drove it back to his house a few
blocks without any problems.
If anyone has information about this I would GREATLY
appreciate it, because I don't want this guy calling me saying I
messed up his transfercase when I'm pretty sure I didn't do
anything.

Message: If he was not with you when you test-drove HIS vehicle, shame on him. Sounds like you didn't do anything wrong. If it was still in 4WD you would have noticed it when you tried to turn on the dry pavement. You can suggest he try backing up a ways to ensure the transfer case is disengaged, but I don't know if that is even needed.

Message: Old School never huts even when applied to something new like SOTF (Shift on the fly)
When ever I had to shift up to 4L to 2wd I always backed up 10 ft to back sure the transfer case was disengaged from the transmission. This really help and insures that your safely back in normal driving.
