Subject: ANYONE WHO REBUILT A NV3500 MANUAL TRANS IP: Logged
Message: I want to hear from anyone who split open a nv3500 manual transmission from a 1994-1996 dodge dakota 4x4. My main question is the race that is pressed in each half of the case for the cluster shaft bearing to ride in, is the race pressed in to the very bottom of the bore so you cant get a tool under it to pull it out? If anyone has rebuilt one of these how did you get the race out of the case? My dodge manual says this race can't be serviced.

Message: I not familiar with this particular item, but I've worked on similar setups. You can try heating the area around the race with a cutting torch. Keep the torch moving in a circular motion. Don't heat the race itself. This will expand the bore and hopefully loosen the race so it will drop out. A good whack on the case with a hammer may be required to "convince" it once you have the area heated.

Message: some bearing races are easy to get out, this may sound weird but it works
take a wirefeed welder and run a bead around the ID of the race.
after the weld cools it will shrink the race and it should come out
however, since the service manual says it is unservicable, i doubt there is any way to remove it. If the service manual says that, there is usually a reason.
Such as it is molded into the case, or it is part of the case.
Like wheel bearings. Not servicable because the hub IS the bearing race

Message: Genl that is what I am thinking it may be molded into the case, I was hoping someone on this site has had one opened up and can tell me what the race situtation is in the case for the cluster shaft.

Message: super bee, that doesn't sound weird at all. I've done them both ways. As I wrote, I'm not familiar with the exact setup here. Is it a ball bearing with the balls and the inner race still attached or a tapered roller with just the outer race still in the case? I don't know what kind of tools eoj has at his disposal. Not everyone has a welder, but a Bernzomatic torch can be had pretty cheaply at any hardware store.
eoj, don't take service manuals as absolute gospel. I read some manuals that had to have been written by idiots. One other thing. Make sure there's no snap ring holding the race in the bore. Sometimes, you can miss them at first glance.

Message: If the race is still in there im guessing a tapered roller bearing, however, there is a small chance of being a ball bearing
