Message: Howling/ growling...like a bearing? With the motor running, I would look at components on the front of the motor: A/C compressor (set to cycle on and off), the alternator, water pump, pwr steering pump, idler(tensioner) pulley...even the harmonic balancer and lower pulley. Maybe you have a bearing gone in one of the previously mentioned items, maybe you have a pulley coming loose...I had the center bolt back out of the harmonic balancer allowing it to wobble on the crank shaft. Luckily it only damaged the bolt and balancer, not the crank.
Good luck

Message: The more I think about it I lean towards the clutch
fan. When mine let go the clutch locked up and
stayed solid. Every time I took off it sounded like
a semi leaving a light.

Message: With your description of sounding like a jet I'm thinkin' he's right...look at the fan. The clutch on the fan. The fan is supposed to 'slip' when rpms are increased (supposed to reduce horspower loss). This action does make the motor noisy, and is normal, but it should quiet down as it catches up. With the engine off you should be able to turn the fan freely. It won't coast forever, but it should rotate with little effort. If it doesn't, that center section (the clutch) needs replaced.
