Message: Yes , however, may be better to just disconnect it at the rear axle , then tie it up to one side . If you 'remove' it from the transmission , then at least some fluid will leak out ..
Be careful when you pull it away from the rear axle - don't let the "cups" come away from the
universal joint - need something to hold them on.. = If you lose any of the little [ pins ]
of the bearing = big troubles..

Message: To the original writer or anyone else. What's the bad idea about using a tow dolly? and do you really need to do nothing except put it in neutral? We want to pull our 2001 Dodge Dakota behind our RV. Can someone tell me the best way to do it and why?

Message: You don't want to use a 2-wheel dolly and leave the rear wheels on the ground, in neutral. What happens over time is that the transmission fluid will heat up, and without the engine running to circulate the fluid to the radiator, and without the transmission fluid pump running, the fluid is stagnant and getting hot in the transmission. So that's why you should trailer it or disconnect the driveshaft, so that the transmission internals won't be spinning.

Message: I'm towing my '02 down south. Can someone explain in more
simple terms how to disconnect the drive shaft. I'm not very
good at mechanical stuff, but will try my best. I'll have help to
get it on the tow dolly, but once I get there, I'm on my own.
It's an SLT club cab.

Message: 4 bolts at the rear differential. wrap some duct tape around the u-joints to hold the caps on and either remove it or tie it up so it can't fall out of the transmission. ( I would remove it and put some duct tape over the tail end of the transmission. Just crawl down there...its pretty self explanatory.
