Subject: Oil Cooler Line Burst IP: Logged
Message: Hello, I have a 98 Dakota 4x4 with a 3.9 automatic. I was driving home from work yesterday and I started having transmission problems. At first it was slipping back and forth between 3rd and 4th gear. I pulled off the highway and waited at a stop light for a couple minutes and then when the light turned green it wouldn't shift out of 1st. I was able to pull into a parking lot before it quit moving at all. When I got out of my truck there was transmission fluid everywhere and it turns out the rubber hose to my oil cooler had separated itself from the aluminum fitting at the radiator. I have 2 questions:
1. Does anyone know the part # to this hose an where I could get one quick? It's about 2 feet long, comes out of the radiator at the bottom of the passenger side with a 90 degree fitting (straight down) and then connects to another line at the middle of the radiator (underneath it). I'm having a heck aof a time trying to find this thing and the dealership want $150 for it.
2. Do I need to worry about any damage done to my tranny or should I be able to replace the hose, fill it back up with fluid, and take off?
Thanks for the help!

Message: NAPA or any parts store should have transmission cooler hose, sold by the foot, or in a package with several feet of it. Use fuel injection hose clamps and cut the hose to length. Be sure to ask for this type of hose, as it has to be oil-resistant, or it will fail.
As to damage, you won't know until you get going again. These are rugged. My dad did this to one car I had, drove it 70 miles leaking. I filled it and it shifted fine, no apparent slipping, but gas mileage was 16 after that, had been 21-22.

Message: My brother towed a 22' sailboat cross-country, with no towing package, no auxiliary cooler, with a V-6 4WD club cab, bed loaded to the hilt. Had to be 5000 lbs. No damage to the tranny. I own it now and it has 183K miles on it, never been serviced other than fluid and filter change, and one band adjustment. I towed a Dodge Daytona home 220 miles with it last year with no effort.
So, yes, it's rugged.

Message: So $10 in hose clamps, a barbed fitting, and 1 foot of hose and I'm back up an running again (I already had the tranny fluid). Transmission shifts as good now as it ever did!
