Message: I have a 4x4 A/T 3.9 Dakota sport and don’t know how to find out what transmission I have in it. I have recently rebuilt the motor and now having problems with the transmission. I was on highway 288 last week about 70mph and it felt like it dropped into neutral. I pulled over and noticed tranny fluid dripping from the front bell housing of the trans. It will shift 1st to 2nd just fine, i can even power brake it let it shift to 2nd but when it tries to go high up in the gears past that point it drops out till i slow down to about 2nd gear. It will not move in reverse either it just makes a loud wining noise. The transmissions also use to make a sound like belts squeaking when stopped at a light at norm running temp. This isn’t the first time I’ve had probs with this trans. Two years ago I took it to Corolla Beach NC and the transmission started to bog the motor down. When I would stop in drive the transmission felt like someone was letting off the clutch while holding the brake and not giving it gas. (its an a/t so no jokes on that)When you put in neutral while its doing that the motor jumps to about 3200 then back to norm. I can rebuild motors but no clue on trans. Please email me with a solution. I’m real short on the cash so a cheap fix would be nice.

Message: What year truck?
There is usually a sticker on the underside of the hood which will state engine, trans, brake size and the like.

Message: Its a 94 Dakota. Someone told me it might be the bands but im thinking maybe torque convert or front seal because iit was leaking trans fluid from the bell housing prettty heavy. What are the odds of the bands and a heavy leak like that a the same time? My 87 GMC Jimmy broke down on 3/10 about a mile from my house and i took the dakota to pull it back with tow straps home and i have plenty of power in 1st and 2nd but when it tries 3rd its gone till the truck drops back to about the speed of 2nd. I laid into the gas pulling the Jimmy to see what the trans would do and left two big black marks were it was spenning out. If it was the bands how hard are they to install for a begginer? is there somewhere else that has the info for the trans because i dont have the origanal hood or most other parts

Message: Yea im well aware of why the transmission is gone. Number one i have pulled way over what the truck is rated to pull. I pulled a 01 Ram Crew Cab 4x4 on a flat bed trailer 12 miles to home one day and gave it no mercy. That was 4 years ago. Ive sucked salt water and fresh water into the moter brobley 5 times, pulled the spark plugs out, turned the moter to clean the water out then fired it right up.The point isnt what ive done to make the trans go but how to FIX it. Never did i ask,"Do you think being rough on my Dakota messed the transmission up?" Every day I drove that truck I have given it hell as did the owner before me. No dought its been one of the toughest trucks ive owned and my friends still want to buy it from me because they have seen what ive put it through and how well its held up.

Message: I had a '94 Dakota, and basicly the same problem as you have with your's. Some times it would skip shift. Latter on, reverse was totaly burned out. So I had to get a complete rebuild. Still didn't work out. So I sold the junk.
