Message: How many miles since your last tune-up? Mine was doing that until I recently tuned it up. It would spit and sputter in the mornings especially when the humidity was high(when isn't the humidity high in South LA. the state).
The last time I had tuned it up was @ 30k miles. Now it has 120k. 90k, not bad on a tune-up. The contacts in the distributor cap were practically non-existent. It's a wonder it would start at all.
Now it runs like a well oiled machine.

Message: At least those ignition components are out of the way... what about the coil? Ever changed it? I had to change mine on my '91 @ ~185k miles.
While I know you said you get a strong smell of gas, when was the last time you had the fuel filter changed?
What about the air filter?
Just to be safe, I'd also check your compression.
If memory serves me, that's a TBI, but apparently your injectors aren't to blame.
You COULD also have excessive carbon buildup...

Message: Could be MAP. Are you running the '95 FI or the '90 TBI? Do you have an O2 sensor? If it's intermittent try checking all connections to those.

air filter is good, doesn't have a coil, and compression was checked 25k ago and was good
it runs strong and good, doenst miss or anything
once in a while it has this problem, and thats all

Message: Doesn't have a coil?
Got a special distributor with an ignition box?
I thought the coil on those Magnums was bolted on the front passenger side of the accessory bracket.
I think those HEI coils look like little laser guns, without a trigger.

Message: its just not a traditional coil like the pre-mags had
why would it only not work for the first 5 or so minutes of driving then get better?
its a REALLY strong smell of gas and the only way to get it running is open the throttle all the way to get some air mixed in there too

Message: Generally when a coil goes south, it will either not start at all or it will start and idle, but die when you attempt to raise the RPMs.
Were you having a problem prior to the distributor work being done 5,000 miles ago? If not, I would look back in that direction. Sounds as though you may be building up condensation in the distibutor. Is it just a morning thing, or has it happened at various times?
