Message: Heya all, I wanna start off by saying (ducks before fists start flying) I'm not a car guy, I work on computers and electronics. I've dabbled in cars, but there just not my thing. Generation thing I suppose, but anyway heres my questions:
A bud of mine is sellin his 97 Dakota for $2000. Obviously the price is good to begin with, but heres the kicker, Automatic, power windows/locks cd player. Only problem is, its got 170,000 miles on it. Currently I'm drivin a 93 dynasty, its been a great car for me, but Its time to upgrade. I just recently replaced the coil, and am having issues with the tranny shuttering between 1'st and 2nd. Early overdrive. So, I figured if the price is good, id grab this truck, but here my question:
The truck has a bit higher mileages that I was comfortable with, grant it my dynasty has only 125000 on it, so its considerably low for its age, and I don't do much driving mainly A to B. But what I'm not sure of, as I have no previous experience with the Dakotas, how do they hold up past 150,000 miles? Can they go to 200,000 with maintenance and good ownership? I'm really not lookin to buy it, and a year down the road have something break on it, obviously if that happens,it happen, but I wanted to get a feel for how they wear over time/mileage. I know the owner has taken care of it, hes the 2nd owner, but hes put new parts in it, in fact hes puttin a new started this weekend. So, to sum up: How do Dodge Dakotas last over time/mileage?

Message: Matt, it is not uncommon for these trucks to go far past 200,000. Of course, I do not know the history of the truck, but if it has been cared for as you state, then it should be good to go for years to come. I have a '96 (different body, but alot of the mechanicals are the same) with 198,000 miles, and it is still running strong. no major probs. I know that there is a thread on here that is called "How many out there over 100,000?" or something like that. So, if you need more confirmation as to the durability of these trucks, take a peek at that thread. I'll post the link if I find it. I think that $2,000 is a good price, ifit runs proplerly and is not rusted out.

Message: The only problem I'm really having with my truck is that the tranny is hard to put in gear at times. Its a 5 speed.
So what do you think is causing the problem?

Message: Well, I have a 1997 Dakota Club Cab 5.2L V8 2WD that is now
currently at 258,889 miles on the original motor and
transmission. I've honestly never had any large issues on it. The
only thing on mine that is "wrong" is that my rear main seal has
begun to leak oil. However, if that ever happens on the 3.9, 5.2,
or 5.9 it's actually easier than most cars because they are two
part seals that you don't have to remove the transmission to get
to. Instead of a $1000+ job on most cars, I've been quoted
about $400 overall. So for now, I've just been adding oil when it
needs it and waiting until I have the funds to deal with the issue.
I think that it will be a decent deal for you in the long run.
Overall, It should be just fine if it has been properly maintained
and cared for as all cars should be.
