Subject: Power steering cooler IP: Logged
Message: I was recently told that If i put on a Power
steering cooler I would not go through so many
pumps. I have a 2004 Dodge Dakota with a 3 inch
lift, 305/75/16's. I have gone through 6 power
steering pumps. Has any one had this problem, and or
else know how to fix it..?
Thanks,
Gavin

Message: Did these power steering pump failures start after you put on those tires?
If so, I know how to fix it.

Message: No, It started before I put them on! I had 285's
before I put on the 305's. What would you say to fix
it? (buy smaller ones?)

If it did it before you put the larger tires
then obviously going back to smaller ones won't
help.

Message: I believe you are the 1st to post on here about repeated power steering pump issues. Is this under normal (daily) driving conditions, a lot of off-roading (slow moving, rocks, careful negociating, etc.) or through the mud type? Under normal conditions this is very unusual...under slow stuff or muddy stuff depending on how taxing you are on the steering system, they could fail. I would think if you had a blockage, say in a line or the steering box, you would notice it in wheel inputs/ response. I would be looking into a cooler as well...especially if you are wheeling it on a regular basis.
Good luck.

If I read correctly it was doing this before the
larger tires.
Gavin never met your mechanic but I can tell you
already he isn't very bright. The issue should
have been addressed & solved after pump #2.
As for the cooler do a google, Alot of guys have
had the same problems and solved it with a cooler.
Find your previous post on this subject. I gave
you links to sites as to where to buy and a site
with a step by step walk through instructions with
pictures.
Power steering coolers came stock on pick ups
years ago and for good reason.
