Message: 2000 Dodge Dakota 4.7 V8
About 6 months ago, it died once and restarted. Didn't have any problems until about 2 months ago every now and then it would run rough at idle then die. A few weeks later it started running rough and dieing constantly at idle. No codes. I've taken the idle air control motor out and cleaned. Did not help the problem. Two days ago, while driving I lost power steering but the engine would idle. I let it set a few hours and restarted. I had power steering but it would not idle. I drove a mile down the highway, lost power steering but it idle just fine. The pulley is turning and doesn't seem to be in a bind. No noise from pump. ANY ideas are welcome.

Message: Have you checked the power steering fluid level?
Check out the power steering pressure switch located on the hi-pressure hose near the pump. They have been known to start leaking fluid down the wiring harness usually causing a false O2 sensor reading.

Message: Fluid level is ok. I replaced the pressure switch and the O2 sensor I guess maybe a year ago due to the fluid leaking in the harness problem. During that time I was getting horrible gas mileage of course due to the O2 sensor going bad. Gas mileage with this particular problem seems to have stayed normal for the most part. I drove it today around town and never lost power steering and it idled just fine. Not sure why one or both problems is there and then goes away and comes back.

Message: Do you know if there is an O2 sensor on both sides of the engine. Im having an intermitant rough idle problem so I changed the plugs which were badly worn (80,000 miles). When I looked at the old ones, the drivers side bank were all black and the passenger bank were white or tan. Coinsidently im always adding power steering fluid. So I was wondering if thats a bad O2 sensor on the drivers side????? or is there only one for both banks?

Message: John, there is an O2 sensor for each bank. try checking for DTC codes by turning the key on/off/on/off/on, the codes will display in the odometer as PXXXX and when it's finished or no codes are present it will display Pdone.
From your description though, it sounds like you have the same leaking p/s pressure sensor problem. It's been posted about on here several times.
It's a relatively easy fix. Change the pressure and unwrap the harness and use contact cleaner to clean all the wiring. Unplug the O2 sensor on that bank and clean the wiring connector and the connection on the O2 sensor.

Message: Dadio
This is great info and sound exactly like my problem. Is the
preasure switch somthing that an auto parts store will have or
is that a dodge item?
I also didn't know about the trick with the key. I had a friend
scan it and there was a bunch of codes. P0207 was one of
the codes
I'm going to check it out today.
Thanks so much.

Message: Just an update on the original post. Not to long after I posted the original post I noticed I had power steering fluid all over my engine. I looked and found the pump was spraying fluid every time I turned the wheel. I had a mechanic check it out and the power steering pump had blown a seal. He replaced the pump and was still having problems. He continued to check and work until he found the rack and pinion had a restriction. He replaced the rack and pionion with a new one. This solved my power steering problems and also solved the idleing problem. He said that maybe with the restriction the pump was causing the motor to be loaded at idle and causing it to die. In the end, the truck is running as good as new now. Maybe this info will help someone in the future.

Message: Just bought a 06' dakota 4.7v8 with 120,000 miles
2wd first thing rough idle I checked the vacuum was 18 at idle and 23 to 24 for the 2500 rpm test
replaced plugs according to sticker spec.
online dodge tech says it's most likely fuel injecter problems/ o2 sensor after reading what everyone else is saying I'm leaning on o2 sensor
due to power steering leaking on o2 harness
note when I turn off AC unit the idle drops from 700 rpm's to 500 rpm's sometimes stalls out

Message: Codes? I'm not sure if later models like your '06
had the same problems with the leaky power steering
pressure switch as the earlier. You would think that
Dodge would have changed something there to cure
that problem.
