Subject: Synthetic Oil Change Interval IP: Logged
Message: When using synthetic oil in a 4.7L, is the 3,000 mile oil change still in effect, or can I wait a little longer. At over $4.00 a quart for Mobile 1, it would be nice to be able to run some extra miles inbetween oil changes. Thanks.

Message: Just a question, but if you care so much about your truck to put synthetic in, why would u wann stretch it out a few extra miles...its a good question, but i say stick with the 3000 miles

Message: There is no reason to change synthetic oils at 3,000 miles. The oil is designed to hold up longer than conventional oils and can go 6,000-7,000 miles between changes. The major problem you will have is the filter. Most filter's don't last more than 2,000 miles before they start bypassing. If you use a good filter and change it every 3,000 miles you will be fine. Both Mobil 1 (M1-204) and Bosch (3402) make an excellent filter. These filters do an excellent job and are by far the best I have ever used. I hope this answers your question.

Message: I have a friend whose masters degree is
chemistry. He has worked more than 15 years
as a laboratory researcher involved in
lubrication analysis and testing. He has some
fascinating insights about oil since all he
does all day is tear down engines and
observe data.
In short- he says today's synthetic oils will last
almost indefinitely. He has done a great deal
of research for one of the major trucklines.
Just our of curiosity, they bought a new
Freightliner and simply NEVER CHANGED
THE OIL apart from regular filter changes!!!
However much oil was in the filter was
replaced. The truck went more than 750,000
miles before they finally could resist no longer
and tore down the engine for analysis. My
friend said there was literally no significant
sign of wear.
That's why Chevrolet puts Mobil 1 in C5
Corvettes at the factory, etc.
Bottom line: after years of 3,000 mile oil
change intervals on dino oil I switched about 7
years ago to full-synthetic. I change oil at
6,000 mile intervals now- resulting in half the
hassles and roughly the same costs.
In truth, if you changed the oil filter once or
twice I'm sure you could go 10,000+ without
much concern- based on the engineering
studies my friend has conducted. Most
manufacturers today are suggesting 7500
mile intervals anyway. But I'd rather be a little
safe than sorry.
In nearly 400,000 miles of using synthetics I've
never had any sort of engine related problem
on any vehicle including Dodge, Chevrolet,
and Toyota.
Good luck,
Steve

Message: I agree with you friend steve. The filter is the weak link. I currently am changeing every 5000 miles while my 2001 Dodge QC is under warranty. I am currently useing a Mobile M-204 filter and a 10W30. I am going to use a full flow and bypass filtering system once the warranty is up. I am also considering amsoil or redline oils with extended drain intervals. I have one friend that uses mobile 10w30 and A/C Delco Ultra Guard Gold filter. He changes the filter every 3000 miles and tops off his oil. He changes it every 9000-10,000 miles.

Message: Thanks for the great input Steve and Burkman. You guys are BOTH right on all counts. I have the original Chrysler manual for my Dakota, and it says....to change the oil every 7,500 miles! Nobody knows my truck better than the people that manufactured it. They said the ONLY time you need to change it every 3,000 miles is when constantly driving on dirt roads and pulling large items constantly in 100 degree weather.
I, of course, don't buy into the mass media 3/3,000 oil change bunk. Thats the biggest automotive marketing gimmick ever created. I change about every 8,000 miles, even on dino/petroleum oils (that is what the manual said). Of course, a high quality filter will strengthen that claim even further.
Amsoil would agree with you STeve. Their oils and filters, and systems are all made for lifetime oil circulation in the engine. Their bypass filtration systems take huge MACK over-the-road trucks 500,000+ miles without oil changes, and less wear than you would believe.

Message: How can you look at your oil and know if it's dirty? I've been told it's supposed to turn black and that this doesn't necessarily mean it needs to be replaced .. what indicates it's beyond this or burnt?

synthetic oil, oil change intervals and oil filters-
here's a rather eye-opening survey regarding
various oil filters. It's mind boggling how much
work went into this study!!

Message: wHEN i GOT MY Dakota, it had 65,000. I changed the oil to Pennzoil, went 3000, then changed it to Pennzoil Synthetic with Bosch filter and drove it 8000 before changing it, it wasn't too dark but dark enough. I now have 3000 on Mobil 1 with Mobil filter and it is very dark, may change it soon. When oil gets dark it is cleaning the engine, doing it's intended job.
I believe if you had a PCV filter you could keep the oil MUCH cleaner LONGER.
My truck always took too much time to pick up oil pressure no matter what I use for oil or filter.

Message: I switched to AMSOIL at 40K and have run 10K on it so far. I plan on changing oil & filter at 12.5K. Picked up 2 mpg average and it seems to just run better. By the way I don't work for AMSOIL but for my money they're the best. Ran an old F-150 up in Alaska for 50K without an oil change,(no I don't recommend it), sold it to friend who just passed 200K and still running.
