Subject: Four Wheel Drive in Reverse IP: Logged
Message: I have part time four wheel drive that I can change with a switch on the dash of my 2004 Dakota (4.7 ltr). I am not sure if it is shift on the fly as I can only change into 4x4 going 5 mph or less but I can be moving. I am wondering if I have four wheel drive in reverse as a few situations I have been in made me think that I didn't. Do the different types of 4x4 available on the 2004 have different capabilities? Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated, I am having a lot of trouble finding info on this topic.

Message: Your transfer case works independently of the transmission. It does not know (or care) whether you are moving fwd or rearward.
When you state 'going 5mph or less' I am guessing you mean shifting into 4 Lo. 4 Lo is generally for things like plowing snow or conditions where you need real torque vice just all wheels providing drive power, ie: extreme traction conditions and reduced wheel spin. If you opperate the system improperly you can cause severe damage to your vehicle.
Your owners manual does a good job of explaining this. I would recommend getting it out of the glove box and reading through it.

Message: I remember the days when people used to back up 5ft to disengage there 4WD. Now you simply turn the nob to 2wd and go.
