So, I have a 2004 Dodge Dakota, v-8 4.7L, it has a
three inch body lift, and 305/75/16's, I have had to
replace the power steering pump three times, and my
rack and pinion twice! Any ideas on what might be
tweaked?

That's a 34" diameter tire.

Do any off-roading, or other stressful (to your steering components) activity?

When it blew out, I was driving up a grade. I honestly don't know what is causing it! The car shop is completely dumbfounded as well.

I'd take yeah's advice and try adding a cooler. You could probably use the samllest tranny cooler you can find or just use some stainless steel tubing abend your own and moount it behing the lower valance to make sure it gets good airflow.

I tried explaining this to someone else on here as well. You are heating the fluid up to a point where it is near or might even reach boil! You will keep going through this untill you get the fluid temp down & keep it down. Only way to do that is a cooler. Years ago older PU's came from the factory with power steering fluid coolers.

Hey, I got my pickup back from the shop again. The fifth Power steering pump. I asked the mechanic if a cooler would work and he said No, it is because of my huge ass tires! Typical mechanic. What should i do?

Of course he doesn't want you do put a cooler on.
He want's you coming back for install of pump #6!

A DuH !

Put some thought into that!

You asked for help I gave it,
Obviously your mechanic doesn't know much.
If so I think the problem would have been solved with pump #2 or atleast 3

It isn't like they are making money, All the pumps are on warranty. So every time it breaks it is taking 300 out of there business pocket! You really think a cooler would work?

Gavin, Whoever is paying for the pump replacement is paying the mechanics labor so the mechanics are not out any money at all. But one day the manufacturer is going to question all these replaced pumps and if the manufacturers rep looks at your truck with the 34" tires, there goes your warranty.

You either need to go down in size on the tires or spend a little money and add a cooler
