Subject: Tranny problem IP: Logged
Message: Hello. Having a problem with the tranny. Vehicle is '92 Dakota 4x4, 5.2V-8, auto trans. Problem seems to have just showed up recently, and occurs in colder weather. In the morning, first couple times I slow up & come to a stop, the tranny seems to disengage. Try to go, and engine just revs some for couple moments, then tranny will kick in/go. Only occurs first couple stops, then for rest of drive okay. Later in day is okay, no problems. After being parked all day while at work, start up & go with no problems. Just seems to happen in the morning, after being parked overnight. Any ideas? Thanks

Message: Or you can go to Allpar.com and get real help, instead of the nonsense above. They don't allow that there.
Pump seal might be going. Have you checked the fluid level? It should be full when hot, idling in park.

Message: Bob,
Thanks for the reply. Yes, fluid level was first thing I checked. It's okay.

Message: Well,
Correct. It's been about 4yrs since the trans. was last serviced. Had thought to have it done this spring. May have to do it a little sooner.
Interesting in that this morning was warmer (low 40's), and there was no problem. Just seems to occur when overnight temps get down to freezing or lower.

Message: Do you use ATF+4 fluid? The truck came with Dexron II, but now only ATF+4 is recommended, and it's almost all that's available. It has better viscosity over temperature.

Message: Bob,
To be honest, have no idea... Transmission last serviced at the dealer, and have no idea what type they put in. Guess I'm kinda' trusting 'em on that one. They've done a good job servicing the vehicle.
Almost 18yrs old now, and aside from maintenance (oil changes, tune-ups, tires, etc.) the only real repair was to replace the starter a few years ago. Replaced the left CV boot (four wheelin where I shouldn't have gone did that one). Oh yeah, the speed control unit went bad about 6yr ago, too. Also, replaced the resistor for the fan (did that one myself).
