Subject: check engine light IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2002 4.7 Dakota and my check engine light came on the same day I went to get a smog check. They failed me because the check engine light was on but there are no problem codes. Anyone have this issue before ?

Message: Could be that your rig has reached one of the magical odometer marks or number of starts to set it off. Since the advent of onboard computer systems, manufacturers have had them preset to trip at various mileage intervals, (65K, 120K, etc) or number of engine starts (don't know those numbers). It can also be there was a glitch in the system (ie: stuck or chattering relay) that self corrected. If it only happens once, it can set off the light but not store a code. You can try disconnecting the NEGATIVE battery cable then turning the ignition switch as though you are trying to start it. This would dissipate any stored energy and MAY clear the light(...doesn't always work on all vehicles). Disconnecting the negative saves you from tedious tasks like resetting the clock and radio presets.
*Note: This may cause a bit of stalling during the 1st few attempts to start/ drive the vehicle. That is normal and just the computer 're-learning' your driving habits.
If this does not work, you have no choice but to have someone with a diagnostic tool reset the light.
Hope this helps.
