Subject: Oil burning smell in the cab
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey everyone I have a 2003 Dakota with a 3.9L V6. It has 126,000 miles on it and I started smelling oil at 120,000 miles. I only smell it when the truck is going uphill before the truck down shifts into 3rd. I have noticed the top of the valve covers are a little wet with oil but not enough to make the strong burning smell coming into the cab. Any ideas?

The truck loses about a quart of oil every 3 months.

While you might not be smelling the oily valve covers, you could be smelling an oily mist which is making them like that. Check PCV valve and hoses for the cause.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Crawl underneath your truck and check the rear main crankshaft seal. If it is leaking it will drip on the exhaust and give off the burning oil odor you describe.

Brandon: Could be your vavle cover gaskets. I would have to change them annually on my 89 Dak. Same symptom you have, oil burning smell in the cab. The oil would leak out and burn on the exhaust manifold.>>>AJ

Brandon if you did not put the valve covers back on correctly you could have warped one.
