Subject: Ball joint retaining nuts over-torqued?!

Okay, so I'm in progress of replacing the upper ball joints on my
97 2wd. I took the old ball joint off and now I am putting the
new one on. While putting the retaining nuts on (the three that
connect to the upper control arm) I was told to tighten them to
50 ft lbs.

I held the nut on the bottom while I tightened the bolt to the 50
ft lbs. During the process, the bolt stripped inside the nut and I
had to brake it to get it out again. The threads basically got
flattened on one part of the bolt. I don't want to do any more if
this is going to happen to all of the retaining nuts/bolts.

Is 50 ft lbs the correct torque spec. for the retaining nuts?

Your best bet would be to get some replacement Grade 8 bolts to replace the cheap ones that came with the balljoints. then find a manual or call the balljoint manufacturer to insure you have the right torque spec.

Looked it up... Guess they only have to be about 25 ft lbs. for each.
And no, you don't have to use a joint press because they are bolt
on ball joints, not press-ins. Thanks for the support though ya'll.

Sorry about that, KY_Man.
The 50 ftlb torque specs I gave you in your original thread came directly from the text of the Safety Recall. I guess the hardware was defective or not properly heat treated.
As Daddio said, get some grade 8 nuts and bolts.

50 pounds is way too much for screws that size (about 5/16 if I recall. Lucky they didn't brealk off in the part!!

....I have a set to install myself, all 4 of 'em). Actually, i just took a look at my waiting parts. They are metric, about 8mm, DIN 10.9 (a little less than 5/16, equivalent to Grade 8 -- assuming the parts meet the specs the marking calls out).

And 25 ft lbs is what that size and grade is rated for. http://dodgeram.org/tech/specs/bolts/M_bolts.html

There's nothing that size in available commercial materials spec'd for 50 ft lbs.

JasonB is right. It says 50 ft lbs for the nuts and bolts that hold the ball joint to the control arm.

Well then, after all this, I'd have to say the 50 ftlb figure is only good for the bolts and nuts that came in the ball joint kit from Dodge. I guess I should have asked that question before posting those torque figures.

If you bought aftermarket ball joints, then you will likely not have those special bolts and nuts. These tables have torque guidance, based on size and grade:
