Subject: Gas Smell IP: Logged
Message: I am trying to diagnose what could be causing a faint smell of gas from my 2002 4.7L Dodge Dakota whenever I am using the heater/AC using the fresh air setting. It is noticeable whenever I am stopped at a light or stuck in traffic and the smell is even stronger when reversing (i.e. backing into a parking stall).
I put a jumper wire in place of the fuel pump relay and found a small gas puddle accumulating on top of the electrical connector on top of injector. This led me to replace all eight fuel injector o-rings, which didn’t help. I did apply dish soap to each o-ring, but I stupidly wiped the rings off pre-install to ensure that they went in clean. I wanted to rule out the o-rings, so I pulled the rail and the injectors and reapplied dish soap to the o-rings. After driving it for two weeks, the smell has defiantly improved as it is not as strong as it once was, however it is still there.
I also did a leak test on the fuel rail by sealing up the holes and dipped it in water and saw no air bubbles, so I don’t think it is coming from the fuel rail.
Could I have shoddy o-rings? I put the jumper wire back on and there is no longer any leaks which tells me no. The only other thing I could think of is there could be a trace leak coming from the quick connect fitting from the fuel hose that goes from the gas tank to the rail. However, I am open to any suggestions at this point as I just want to get this fixed.

Message: Wow, sorry about the big block of text! I coped and pasted from word so I could spell check it, but I guess I should have manually put in line breaks.
I forgot to mention, that the smell started just over a week after I replaced my spark plugs with NGK V-Power plugs, which I did over the summer.

Message: since you just changed the plugs maybe they are not hot enough to burn all you fuel and you are having raw fuel into the exhaust so you would smell it stronger in reverse cause you are backing into your fumes....
just an idea

Message: Daddio: The O-rings are only about a month old, are you suggesting I purchase another set, or can I just clean off the dishsoap and use clean motor oil?
STS: The dishsoap idea came from a number of threads I came across while searching up o-ring replacement. Some sites suggested using dish soap as opposed to motor oil as the soap will not cause the o-rings to swell up and/or distort.
Mario: Thats definatly something I never thought of. I'll pull the injectors and try oil as opposed to dish soap and if that doesn't work, I'll put the plugs that I removed back in and see if that clears it up.
So I guess I'll pull the plugs and o-rings. Since they have only been installed for a month, could I get away with just cleaning the soap off and applying motor oil?

Message: yes you should be able to get by with simply cleaning the o-rings and if you have ever owned a carburated car yo9u can smell it when its runnign too rich cause of all the raw fuel...same concept in an injected motor.

Message: Nope, then its not running rich. I've got a '76 Nova sitting in my garage that has a 327 small block Chevy and I put a 4bbl Holley carb from a 427 that is jetted wayyy to rich for that small block... I know what rich smells like :p
I'll clean the o-rings and apply motor oil this time. Any other suggestions on how I can pinpoint the smell if it still smells after?

Message: Anytime you pull the injectors it's cheap insurance to change the orings even if they've only been on there one day.
