Subject: Engine & fuel light and fuel guage issue

While driving around the check engine light and the low fuel light will come on. The fuel guage will drop to E. This happens no matter how much fuel there is in the tank. The next time the engine is started the guage and fuel light are fine and the check engine light stays on for the next few starts. Been going on for 6 months. Tried the key on off on off on and do not see any codes to help. Where do I start looking?
Thanks

Hi Mark
How many miles on the truck?
Have you checked fuel pressure?

Again to check codes

# Codes are displayed on digital odometers on newer models.

# On many 2001 and newer models, holding in the trip odometer reset button while turning the key to RUN will start a self test, with a readout on the odometer. It will also activate all instrument panels, one at a time. We do not know if this will show computer codes, or whether it only tests the instrument panels. At the end, it may show a few odd codes that are firmware versions and not error codes.

# On most cars, the codes will read out if the engine light is on - all you have to do is put the key into the RUN position.

# Normally, to get codes, you put the key on OFF and then rapidly do OFF-ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON (on some cars you have to do four or five, not three, OFF-ON cycles). On our test 2002 car, the key did not go back to unlock, so it was ACC-ON-ACC-ON-ACC-ON.

(from allpar)

Maybe you didn't do the key on/key off correctly.
If you did then try the trip meter procedure.

Thanks for the help!
The trip odom
eter seft test was interesting but no codes showed.
Was able to get code using ACC-ON-ACC-ON-ACC-ON.
It was P 0463

I found this in another post for the code. Will this cause problems or just be annoying? I hate to screw with the tank sending unit if I dont have to?

Symptom:
P0463 Fuel Level sending unit volts too high.

When monitored: Ignition and battery volts above 10.4 volts.
Condition: The fuel level sensor signal voltage at the PCM goesabove 9.9 volts for more than 90 seconds.

Possible causes:
1) Fuel level sensor circuit open
2) Fuel pump module wiring harness intermittant
3) Fuel level sensor
4) Powertrain control module
5) Fuel level sensor signal circuit shorted to sensor ground circuit.

I checked the Technical Service Bulletins for that year and model truck, unfortunately I couldn't find anything - however, I did find one about the locks locking/unlocking by themselves which I thought was kinda humorous.

Anyway, the 91 Dakotas had a similar issue which is under the TSBs (I know this off-hand because I have this truck and this problem, when I first bought the truck if I filled it up it would read below empty, but its "pretty much" gone away). It resulted in a new Sending Unit and Harness, and a rather tedious (2 hours) job to fix it, and turning of the fuel pump (I think, if I remember right).

Hope this helps in figuring out your problem, but don't ever rule out the "simple" things, like a shorting wire.
