Subject: cv joint play? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2001 4.7 QC AWD with 107,000 mi. While rotating the tires today I checked the cv boots for wear and noticed that the left side inner (tripod) joint has some up / down play; about 1/4 inch. The play varies a bit as the axle is turned. The outer joint has no play, and neither do both right side joints. My question is, how much play, if any, is allowable? I'm assuming that the joint is on its way to failure but would like another opinion. All 4 of the cv boots are intact and there are no grease leaks. The Daimler-Chrysler service manual doesn't mention anything about allowable play and I'm not really noticing any of the diagnosis issues listed in the service manual. I have had a slight vibration while turning at highway speed but have assumed it was a slightly out of balance tire. Any advice is appreciated.
UPDATE:
I replaced the CV joints / axle shaft only to find that the original CV joints were fine. The play is coming from the splines between the inner CV joint and the intermediate axle shaft in the differential. I priced the intermediate shaft and my local dealer wants $500.00! Should I be concerned with any play between the intermediate shaft and inner CV joint? Manufacture date of my Dak is 8/2000 and the intermediate shaft was changed at some point after that date due to clunking. I don't have any clunking. Should I even worry about it?
Thanks
Ralph
