Message: The 318 was dropped in favor of the lighter weight 287 power tech engine. The 360 motor was replaced by the 345 cid Hemi which in part produced 100 more HP but just like todays engines. Didn't really shoot out the type of toruqe we would have seen back in the old day's. I can only guess that has something to do with Emissions.
For example the Viper's 8.4L 10 engine puts out more HP than TQ.

Message: I believe what STS is getting at is that the 318 was the benchmark from where the other motors were built. Yes, there are some higher performing (stock) mills, but they were all 'modifications' of the original...the 318. They were quickly over shadowed with the 340 and 360, but in reality plenty of folks ran them due to their relative inexpensive cost. The 318 can be built to perform right up there with the other Pentastar engines.
Cheers.

Message: True to form, it was one of the best V8's that Mopar ever built. Also notably was also the 273 and 225 slant 6.

Message: of all the 318s me or anyone in my family has owned, not a single one of them ever had a major mechanical problem
and many people seek them out for derby cars, they are tough to kill

Message: I defiantly enjoyed the power and reliability of the ole 318 under the hood of my Dakota. The only problem that made the engine of no use was an electrical problem. But other than that it was a pretty strong engine.
