so i went for a drive in my 91 dakota v8 5.2 single cab long box and i was going aroun 100 kmh when my truck made some weird noises underneath it and shut off and when i stoped the truck started again fine but wouldnt move at all i tried going threw 1,2 drive, and reverse but it wont move, wont move in 4wd either, so when i went to tow it the rear axle began to swing out so my tires were hanging out, what would this be im not sure if i should bring it to a shop or nmot might be too expensive.

Don't know how much help you will get with this one. Sounds like you may have more than one problem. The rear tire hanging out...both sides or just one?
Was the whole rear differential moving out or was the axle coming out of the differential?
Driver's side or passenger side?

I'm asking about this 1st because it would seem like this part would prevent you from getting your rig anywhere but the side of the road.

2nd part:
Are you getting any audiable noises from the transmission when you shift it into gear (with the motor running)?
At 100kmh, did it simply die, or did you shut it off due to it acting up?
Did your rig 'buck' or 'shudder' when the 'funny noises' were heard?
Did it rev up, like it had popped out of gear prior to shutting off?

The more descriptive you are, the more likely you will be to get some responses. Good Luck!

the tire sticking out is on the passenger side and it made some grinding kind of noises then just shut off no high reving, and when i try to put it in gear it does make some noises and the drive shaft and everything underneath looks good besides the tire/rim is moving off the axle and the bolts are on tight its not just the rim falling off . when it shut off i didnt really know it shut off so it didnt really buck or shutter just made some grinding kinds of sounds then died. thanks for any help you guys im trying to figure out what this could be and how much money im looking at to get the truck repaired might trade it on a dirtbike . thanks bill.

Bare in mind, I am making these assumptions just by what you are describing online. Without actually seeing it, I could be way off. It almost sounds like your passenger side axle may have sheared or the retaining clip may have come off inside the differential. Either way, you are probably looking at some rear end work. Could be an $80 fix, could be a +$300 rebuild.

I am at a loss as to why it shut down while driving.

It should have moved when you put it into 4WD and the tranny in gear...even with a damaged rear end, the front end should have tried to pull it along. Did it respond as though the brakes were applied? That would indicate that something in the drive train may be binding (like something in the rear end). If the engine simply rev'd...like it was in park, or neutral, then you may have a transmission malfunction. Not to scare you, but I recently spent $2,300 on a complete transmission rebuild. That included removal and install being done by a shop. You can save $300 to $400 by removing/ installing yourself. I have seen websites that sell remanufactured ones for around $1,900. I just didn't feel like laying on my garage floor 2 weekends in a row (being lazy, I know).

Unfortunately, due to age and it's current (broke) condition, I wouldn't expect to get much out of it. this is one of those instances where you either spend the 'duckets' to get it fixed and own it a while, or unload it cheap to someone who wants it for parts or who has the ability to fix it themselves. I would at least get an estimate by a qualified mechanic before making a quick decision that you may regret later. Good Luck.
