I want your opinions on the following:

Do you think shifting without using the clutch puts unecessary stress on the trans?

Very seldom do I use my clutch other than taking off from a dead stop. My truck has about 110k on it. It is running and shifting great, no problems just wanted some opinions.

No grind? No problem. You,re just managing the load with the throttle so it glides betwen the shifts. Just don,t daydream and misstime it. Grinding gears is embarassing.

Daddio, its ok if you are really good, but the one thing to remember is, its hard on the synchro's. One of two things has to happen, if you are just a tad off, the synchro either has to speed up, or slow down the engine so it will go into gear. I have some
Freightliner trucks and they have 13 speeds, without synchro's so shifting one of them with or without the clutch doesn't make a lot of difference. I would think if you have been shifting yours this long you must be doing it correctly. Still if it starts to get hard to shift, I would think its the synchro's going bad. Just my opinion.
Good Luck

I always use the cluch between shifts. I think it's just comon sense.

I've been meaning to ask Dakota49. Why is it when you down shift you can't skip a gear in a big rig?

STS it depends on your speed, but I have many times skiped gears when down shifting, for example, I'm do 60 MPH and I need to slow down to 40, I don't down shift until I find a gear that will pull the truck, I just skip about 3-4 gears and rev the engine up drop into 6th over, and go on from there. (I have a 13 speed in my Freightliners) Now if you mean while pulling a hill and the truck is slowing down, its best to drop one gear at a time to keep up your speed as much as possible. You could just let off and let the truck slow until you could get the transmission into another lower gear. Just remember, you can't just rev the engine and skip a gear because if your road speed is too fast for the gear you are trying to shift into it will just grind. I hope that helps STS.

I remember watching "Ice Road Truckers" and they had the same problem with the Super 10. Alex was to keen to the 13 speed transmission so every time he shifting into a lower gear it wouldn't lock in.
