Subject: Rear diff leaking IP: Logged
Message: So, I noticed that I have some leaking coming from my rear
differential. Is that something I can fix by myself assuming it is a
gasket causing the leak? The reason I am guessing it is a gasket
because the truck has 240k miles on it, and the transmission pan
had the original crappy caulk gasket lining in it, so I would only
assume this gasket might be going as well.
If I can fix it myself, can I just get what I need at autozone?

Message: Is it leaking from the rear cover or the front/pinion seal? One is way easier to repair than the other.

pouring down the back cover.

Message: Yeah thats a simple fix, grab some fresh gear oil and a gasket and after a hundred or so miles re-tighten the bolts, i did my gear oil and diff gasket a while back and after a few trips i noticed a small drip, but meanwhile i bought a new rear diff cover so i did it all again and no leaks so far....I hate any leaks.

Message: Just did it myself for like $60 and the mechanic wanted $250 LOL. a bit time consuming but well worth doing yourself. Get some RTV and gear oil and clean that baby up. You tube (expert village) has some great vids on doing this job...although i'm big on using a manual for anything. Yes I'm anal about torcking specs and such. Hope that helped

RTV?

Message: I don't see where you mention what model/year the truck is??? But i can tell you that I have a 2000 dakota and there is no gasket for the rear diff. you just drain, take the cover off, scrape the old RTV from cover and rim, clean with break clean spray, use new RTV to form a gasket, bolt it back on and fill. thants it... BTW you should get high temp RTV... even though its not a high temp area, I've found it to be better. take a look at you tube or e-how there are great vids on this procedure. good luck.
