I was under the car today checking my suspension system and notised that one of my rear shocks was rusted to the point that I could sqeeze the round shaft and it would crumble without too much effort. There was no noticeable fluid leak as the hanes book suggested to watch for. I am however concerned about the rust on the upper shaft of the shock. So when is it time to replace the shocks? thanks

"So when is it time to replace the shocks?" Usually when they start to leak oil. My original front shocks blew out with only about 22K on my truck. I have about 106K now and still have the original back shocks on it.

If you're not satisfied with the ride quality now, change them.
