Message: I was under the car today checking my suspension system and notised that one of my rear shocks was rusted to the point that I could sqeeze the round shaft and it would crumble without too much effort. There was no noticeable fluid leak as the hanes book suggested to watch for. I am however concerned about the rust on the upper shaft of the shock. So when is it time to replace the shocks? thanks

Message: "So when is it time to replace the shocks?" Usually when they start to leak oil. My original front shocks blew out with only about 22K on my truck. I have about 106K now and still have the original back shocks on it.
If you're not satisfied with the ride quality now, change them.
