I have a 2000 dodge dakota pick up 2WD with 78K miles... i was wondering if i should replace it??? I have heard that its only a matter of time that they go and can cause damage to the engine if it does. I have to switch out the serpentine belt anyway so i figured that while i'm in there i might as well do it. I don't hear any noise coming from the water pump should I wait longer? does anyone know the life expectancy of this pump? thanks

My first water pump had to be changed at 99k miles. The second one had to be changed at 170k miles. I believe the second one lasted less because I ran it for a while at first with straight water. Antifreeze lubricates the pump and helps it last longer. I would wait until the pump leaks a bit out the bottom and change it immediately after that. Be careful not to overheat.

It is a lot more work to change the water pump beyond removing the serpentine belt... at least in my truck.

Yeah, not a huge deal, but definitely more work than that on my '00 as well. I think I had to pull the alternator and some idlers as well.

The biggest issue was getting the fan off. I think I had to jam a bolt in somewhere and use a rope tied to it in order to loosen the bolts w/o the fan spinning around. The first time I pulled out my radiator because I was afraid I was going to nip it. Its much easier than paying the $400 that a shop will charge though.

I have had alot of waterpumps go out in various vehicles over the years and they tend to go out slowly like Mark said it should start to leak out of the weep-hole first, thats when i would change it or if it starts making noise, but not until then. As they say "if it aint broke dont fix it" you'll have time when the symptoms occur and i have never damaged an engine by waiting for the noise or the leak.

I have been wrestling with the fan clutch all day and could not get it off. I tried everything from standing on a crow bar and hamering the hell out of a wrench as someone suggested, however it still didnt budge... i'm exhausted... Short of getting the special tool, which no one has in my area, I'm out of energy right now. Any other suggestions?

on another note i took a look at the weep hole under the pump and there is a stain which could have been caused by leaking. I can't verify if that is coolant but i did see coolant drain out of one of the bolts when I removed it. That bolt was rusted also at the top portion. so I think it was leaking coolant into that bolt compartment in the pump but doesn't look like it was leaking out of the pump at that bolt location. What should I do? does it sound like I should continue to struggle and get it off and replace it with the brand new pump already purchased or just leave it alone until it goes? I am sooooo tempted to do that after trying to get the darn fan cluch off unsucessfully. HHHHHHHHHHHHHELP!

List of tools I used to remove the clutch and fan assy from my '00 3.9.

1) BFW(adjustable type)

2) BFH

3) Visegrip Pliers

Put the BFW on the hex nut of the clutch making sure it fits nice and snug on the nut. Now take the Visegrip pliers and lock them onto the pulley grabbing it on the side so you don't damage it. Like this ]>. Now grasp the BFH in the hand of your preference with a firm grip. Now, facing the engine from the front of the truck, whack the the BFW with the BFH counterclockwise(towards the passenger side). Shouldn't take more than 2 whacks. Mine came right off.

Ok guys, I feel defeated... I wacked the hell out of it facing the engine towards the passenger side, with wd40 and nothing. The damn thing is wedged on so tight that the only way off is to take the water pump and fan assembly off as a unit and order new cluch, fan and pump... OUCH! So i put it all back together and to my surprise after wacking it to hell and back and standing on a crow bar weged between the pullies and everything else I tried the darn pump still functions...WoW!!! I guess it's still alive and wants to keep serving :) When it goes I will have two choices... take it to a pro who may be able to get the darn thing off or bite the bullet and buy the fan, cluch and pump and do it myself. i think it would still be cheaper if i do it myself, i really don't think anyone will be able to get the darn thing off. who know, perhaps with the right wrench set designed for the job... However, i even rigged up a pegged metal bar to do the trick and it was bent up like a rattle snake when I was done wacking the wrench. Only thing I am pissed about is giving up. not easy for me to do... very frustrated!

buy a good quality penetrant(not wd 40.....i find it is a good lubricant, but not a penetrant) and spray it daily for a week or more and then try again. i did this with mine and it worked great. good luck with it.

I had the same problems that you are describing and performed similar procedures described by you and the other folks. After getting frustrated multiple times, I decided that it was a great opportunity to just put a new waterpump on (sans clutch and fan), and install some nice electric fans and a Permacool controlling unit to cycle the fans automatically. There are some recent threads that cover how to do this. I would say that my total investment is around $90 for a controlling unit and two fans from a junkyard.

Look at it this way... your not giving up, your just delaying the battle for better time when the odds are in your favor ! also i can say i told you so, if it aint broke....you know the rest,Dakownr is right though, it is a good opportunity when the battle commences again to consider electric.
