Subject: getting a posi and gears?? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1998 dodge dakota crew cab 2wd 5.2L with a 8.25 axle. I have a boat that weights about 5000lbs that i want to tow. i want to know what posi unit to choose and if i should change my 3.55 gear ratio for 3.73 or 3.92s. And if so whats a good brand and place to get it. i just don't want to be stuck on the boat ramp spinning my tires.
thanks for your help!!

Message: buy a 4x4...you wont be stuck anywhere, even a boat ramp. but i think detroit makes a locker for your truck and i know they are a pretty good brand. i would get a locker instead of a posi that way you can electronically decide when you want it locked in. other wise with a posi all the time tight turns will never be fun. as far as the gear ratio goes i would consider going lower, it sounds like a good idea but im not sure where to get one. i put a detroit air locker in my grand cherokee laredo. its running 35 inch bfg mt's. i wheel it hard and havent had a problem.

Message: You won't find a GM (posi) unit to fit your mopar. We run limited slip; mopar used to call it "sure grip". I get excellent traction with an aftermarket Auburn limited slip. They're about middle of the field in terms of price and reliability. Not a big deal in tight turns. In the meantime, sometimes it can help to feather the brake for traction as you apply throttle to pull your boat out.
Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Message: If your truck does not have any problems towing your boat, I see no reason to gp throught the expense of swapping gears. If you need a locker, check this site out:
http://www.richmondgear.com/powertrax/lockright.html
A couple of people have posted here about these. If your truck is stock, this is an inexpensive way to get a true locking rear diff.

Message: I'm running a 3.90 gear on a mopar stock style posi, and I have towd 10,000 lbs no problem, but stopping is another story, I like the posi tight turns aren't bad once in a while you might hear the inside tire chirping depending on how tight it is. As you can see in my video there is no problems towing :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLzw8SJ1xMc
