Message: I have seen a number of posts on low oil pressure but no follow ups as to actual problems. I have a 95 318 5spd, 65k, and had the oil light came on under hot idle, especially under braking. I found the oil to be low, and I changed it as it was due. I have been using Mobil1 10-30, and Fram filters since new. I thought the problem was fixed but it reappeared. I believe the gauge, as the lifters get noisy when the pressure drops. If I keep the rpm > 600 pressure comes back. I have down a bit of heavy trailer towing, but not recently. Also, the dealer replaced the rear main seal @60k. The opinions I have seen listed are: 1) Fram Filters, 2) oil pump, and 3) mains. I would appreciate any feedback from people with any experience here.
Thanks.

Message: I can only give a little input into this problem. In my Sebring I used Fram 2 different times. Both were times at a hobby shop where I forgot to buy one and they had the Fram. With the Fram on, the oil pressure was a bit lower than with Purolator, and even more so than Pure One. Just a little input.

Message: How many rpm's is it turning at idle? You said that if you keep it at 600 the pressure comes back. I know the 4.7 idles low but I don't know if the 318 is supposed to go that low and hold pressure. Have you consulted a dealer about this? If they don't know my only suggestion would be try putting a decent filter on it first. If that doesn't work I would think about a new oil pump. If you live somewhere that doesn't get overly cold you could try Mobil 1 15W-50 but I don't think the oil is the problem. My 4.7 holds a little under 40 lbs hot using Mobil 1 5W-30 with a Mobil 1 or K&N filter and only turning about 550 to 600 at it's lowest rpm. I'm no expert by any means but I hope I can help a little.

Message: I also have a low oil presure problem. At cold idle it is about 70psi ... but at HOT idle i have 5psi or even lower ....here is a strange part.... when im on the road and i give the engine gas the presure goes up a little... when i let off the gas it jumps up about 5psi for a second then drops to idle presure of 5psi ... what could be my problem ?

Message: I own a 01 Dakota with a 4.7 with a lazy oil pump I believe! It`s not moving in the morning till about ten seconds. Mind you the check engine light come back on and some times with a the chime for you to look at the dash. It acts like I just started it after an oil change cause I can hear it picking up when the gauge finally moves.
It`s at the dealer now so I can`t expect much. We`ll see!

Message: I have a 92 Dakota, auto trans. and 200,000 miles on it.
When the engine is started there is a 10 second delay in getting any real oil pressure. And when it does get any oil pressure it only just makes it past the lower mark on the gauge. And when the engine is idling at a stop light in drive or when backing up the oil light flickers rapidly and oil pressure dips just below the line.
My engine is the original without being rebuilt and at 200,000 miles burns a quart of oil every 200 miles. Keeping it topped off at the proper level every day does not help the low oil pressure either. I have tried going from the 10W30 to 10W40 the last time the oil was changed with no noticable difference. And I known the oil pump is worn but is very difficult to replace and I am unable to find anyone willing to work on a 92 Dakota in the Dallas, Texas area.
Any ideas on boosting oil pressure or service centers that work on older cars and trucks in the Dallas, Texas area?
Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Message: Cyberwiz - I have the same problem as you. Actually live in the Dallas area as well. Couple things you can look at.
1) Intake manifold gasket. Take your air filter off and open the throttle body valve and look inside. If the internals are coated in oil residue you have a blown gasket. I am actually plannong on swapping mine out completely with an M1 intake this weekend. If you do not want to go that route, contact Hughesengines.com. They make a kit that eliminates the belly pan problem.
2) Oil sending unit may be failing. This may be why your gauge is acting erratically.
3) If your oil pump is bad, it is not a terribly difficult repair, just time consuming. You have to lift the engine up a couple inches in order to remove the oil pan and swap out the pump. I would think any reputable shop would be able to do the work if you are not up to tackling it yourself.

Message: alright theres a few of you on here with the same problem so i am just gonna say it once, lol, if you've got low oil pressure you have one of a few things wrong, something leaking, something broken in the pump, or worn bearings.
now, if you dont see any leaks, or hear anything odd in the engine, that leaves really only one other thing worn bearings
now thats not to say that nothing else causes low pressure, but they are very common causes

Message: the things should idle at 900 RPMs atleast, advance your timing and it should be fine. 600 is really to low.

Message: At 200,000 you could probably go to
20W50 or straight 30 if you can find...
