Subject: 2001 Dakota with Loose Steering
IP: Logged

Message:
I've got a 2001 4WD Dakota (4.7L V8) and am having an issue where the steering seems to be loose. While driving down the road, I am able to move the steering wheel about 10 degrees side to side without moving the tires. Have quickly checked the ball joints and tie rods, and they generally look OK. Any thoughts / suggestions? I've read a little about possibly tightening the worm gear on the steering box? Does anyone have a description of how to do this, or a pictoral of where it is located? Appreciate any thoughts...

Thoughts ? I'd think you'd want to do more than a quick check of the ball joints, etc. - before ruling that out. Not as familiar with the newer power steering boxes, but I know it is possible to go too far adjusting the older ones. Worn ball joints could cause what you describe; had that recently on my '00.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

I'm not sure but doesn't your '01 have a rack & pinion? You probably have a worn coupler that connects the steering shaft to the rack.

Be careful if you start adjusting the worm gear in the steering box. I did this on my '97 Jeep GC and got a little carried away... :)

If you get the worm gear adjustment too far off, the steering will be tight but will not "center" correctly. This will cause the truck to be difficult to drive in a straight line.

Be Careful.
