Subject: fog lights functionality? IP: Logged
Message: My just-bought 97 Dakota/318 has the factory fog light option.
one of them has been broken off...the whole damn bracket has broken off.
I cannot believe the ditsy dames I bought the truck from could have done the damage I've subsequently found on this unit. Sigh.
My area does have fog (from the SF Bay, and some ground/tule fog in the winter)
do these fog lights actually work as fog lighting (flat beam, low aim, etc). Answers from folks in fog areas, like the Hudson Riover Valley, Sacatmento, and so on appreciated<BG>
or are they mostly cosmetic.
if cosmetic, shoot, I'll re-plumb the holes for brake cooling. No, I can't imagine needing brake cooling (I'm an old fart) but...??

Message: A TRUE fog lamp is yellow. Using white so called
fog lamps in the fog only bounces a lot of the
white light back into your eyes.
I call WHITE fog lights, running lights. To
each his own I guess..

Message: Well, when I get a round tuit I suppose I'll browse the junkyards for another assembly. unless someone on this here board has one available...?
Some more important stuff to deal with first. Gads...this truck (a 97) was passed on to daughter from father, the original owner, 4 years ago. Things I did not notice before I bought it: shift knob on the automatic is broken (how do you do that?) hoping JB Weld fixes it. Ball joints hosed completely on LF, upper hosed on RF. Plugs (I spent several pretty-much happy hours swapping plugs today, real bitch getting the plug wires off the plugs!)--they had the wrong plug in the first place (for an earlier vehicle...much shorter nose--and they were worn to an avg of abotu a 55 thou gap, but the color was OK. Much smoother with new plugs. Now to tackle the dist cap if I can figure out how to get to it. (it was easy on my old vans...<G>)

Message: Hey Mac, did you still have those stupid metal shields around the plugs? Just wondering. those can be a pain that's why i removed mine a few years ago on the first time changing the plugs.
Your distributor cap should be easy to get to, you'll just have to crawl up on top of the engine! HA

Message: More important than color is output, aiming, and cutoff. Yes, they can work. However they would be their most effective in a situation that's usually illegal: Running with fogs and no headlights. When the headlights are on at the same time, the headlight beam reflects off any moisture in the air and actually partially obscures your vision, somewhat counterracting any effect of the foglights.

Message: yeah, I still have the plug heat shields. They didn't get in the way of anything and they do sound like a good idea.
Got the cap...drafted a grandson who was wasting the week after HS graduation playing video games...he climbed up and with better eyebones than mine, the two of us worked out a plan and executed perfectly.
Ran like a champ until it threw two codes. <ARGHH!>
