Subject: Not Starting and Jerking IP: Logged
Message: I have had a problem that occurs every once and a while. When I try and crank up, sometimes it will not stay cranked. It starts, but usually dies. I can finally get it cranked if I press the gas while cranking, but would have to keep the rpm around 2k to keep it going. If I let off the gas, it would just die. After about 20-30 sec of pressing the gas keeping it at 2k it will even out and stay cranked.
I've had that problem off and on. Maybe once a month or less for about a year and a half.
I just started having another symptom thats somewhat similar. After shifting into drive or reverse, and barely let off the brake where I'm barely moving, it starts to jerk, not really acting like it's going to die, but just jerking. But after you start driving at higher speeds, it's fine...
If anyone has a guess at what this could be, or have had this problem before, PLEASE HELP ME OUT! Any help/opinion would be great!

Message: I'm having a similar problem. My vehicle won't start unless I give it a little fuel (1998 Dakota SLT RWD), and won't stay running unless I give it fuel (at around 2K RPM for about a minute or two, and slowly ease down the RPMS. It's weird. I'm thinking it might have to do with fuel/air sensors myself, but I'm far from a mechanic. I was told a couple things that it could be the computer unit, or a fuel enrichment sensor. Any ideas?

Message: Sounds like you two have a similar problem - how old are your batteries ? The PCM in our Dakotas is particularly sensitive to low voltage. One of the first signs of this is loss of idle memory - usually before you will notice slower cranking. Once you keep it reved up a little, it relearns the idle and the alternator brings the voltage up. I've seen this twice with mine now, and both times, a new battery was the cure. Perhaps the jerking is related ?

Message: No, I started having this problem, Had the fuel system cleaned and had to get a new battery a little later on, and it still does it. I'm thinking it has to be one of those sensors for air or something...Any other thoughts?????

How is fuel mileage ?
Or , have either of you cleaned the
Air Intake Control ? - back of throttle body

Message: I need to get a haynes Manual for this thing. So I'll know what the heck ya'll are talking about.
It hasn't thrown any codes. Or at least the check engine light hasn't come on.
They did say something a while back about the cat getting 'bad'. I didn't realize a cat could cause those kinds of problems. The cat was replaced when I bought the truck about 3 years ago. It had about 34k miles on it when I bought it. Do I need to check the cat converter? how would I do that w/o paying a bunch of money for someone to look at it?
Fuel Mileage is still good(normal) 16-18MPG.
I will get a haynes manual, or look some of this stuff up online and see where it all is to check it...or do what I can...
NOTE---it does it more(not able to start) when it's been sitting a couple of days or sometimes just overnite.

Message: I just started having a somewhat similar problem on my '88 Dakota last week. One guy thought it was vapor lock, and it almost seemed like it at first. I'd removed the gas cap & then put it back on, and was back to normal. That is, until I went back outside an hour later, the problem returned. Mine was a VERY rough, erratic idle, and I couldn't keep it running unless I revved it up. I have no tach but I estimate at least 2k before it wouldn't die.
I hadn't tried starting it up for a few days, because I was pondering what to do. I just went outside, and thought, hmmm, If I can keep it running enough to get up a hill about 1 mile from my house I can get it to a friend's shop.
However it started right up ok about 3 times in a row. Another guy suggested O2 sensor as a possibility, but why would it only do this intermittently? BTW the day this happened was fairly warm out, probably > 80F.
TIA,
Judy - Vancouver, WA

Message: Since everyone is saying there's probably a code to check(even if there's no check engine light on), and/or the 02 sensor, I'm going to check those out.
I didn't give the specs of my truck in the first post:
99, V6, 3.9, 4wd
Thanks for all the help Ya'll.

Message: My 99 V6 Dakota did this, seems to happen if
you let off of the key too soon while starting.
If you reset the PCM by lifting a battery cable
it will run fine. Sounds like a programming
problem to me.

I have a feeling it's something to do with pressure, because it will jump a couple of times at highway speed when going up a hill or accelerating.

Message: Timing is controlled by the PCM. turning the distributor will only affect the injector sync. Angelita, is it hard to start when it's cold. Have your battery load tested. A weak battery can still start the engine but it can cause the PCM to lose it's idle memory and the engine would not idle on it's own until the battery volatge comes back up enough.
