Subject: Wiring 3rd light ? IP: Logged
Message: I purchased a used Leer cap for my 2001 Dakota. It has a 3rd light in the cap. The light has a cable coming out with two wires. I first tried wiring the cable to the right rear brake light, but no matter what combo I splice the wires, the 3rd light flashes with the directional. Then I bought an adapter for my 7 pin trailer outlet. Same thing happens. No matter which combo I try to swap and splice the wires, it either flashes with the left or right directional. I was told there is a relay that makes the brake lights flash when you turn on the directionals, and I don't know how to bypass it. I cannot pass inspection with the 3rd light flashing. Please can anyone help? Thank You

Message: If unable to find above , another solution is to use two diodes ( Radio Shack ) or other electronics supply .
Connect a diode to each side brake light
then 'bar' end of diodes goes to hot of the third
light..

Message: Thanks guys for your help, especially Fred. I found the single spare wire above the spare tire and wired that to the 3rd brake light, then the other brake wire to the truck frame. It works perfect. I wonder what else is hidden inside the truck. Thanks again !

Message: just an idea,
i have a cap on my 97 and i do some landscaping in the summer so it has to come off but i like having a dry spot to put things so it doesnt get snow covered in the winter. i spliced a 4 prong trailer connector into one of my tail lights and put the other end on the cap light. so its not hard wired which makes the cap easy to remove when i need to haul something tall.
