 Subject: increase hp

I'm looking to find different ways that other people have upped their hp, i've got a 2000 slt 4x4 with 5.9lt v8magnum, i do quite a bit of 4x'ing and tow an older heavier style trailer through the mountains and foothills in canada, i've been looking into putting a chip in it first off but any other ideas would be appreciated or if you have any suggestions on a quality chip, I've already put a custom exhaust, removed the catalytic converter and put 3" straight pipe on it...

i didnt know that the dakota came with a 4x4 5.9 option....i thought it was only the durango's????
but ive been wrong before.

4 doors were available with the 5.9
1990 sport RC SB, 1995 318drivetrain, 3.92 gears (came with truck) Powertrax "traction system", 95 dash/steering wheel, hearthrob exhaust, headers, cutout after y-pipe, necessary electric fan add-a-leafs, 30x9.5 mud tires, cranked T-bars, AR 39 15x8 rims, grill guard, roll bars

Well you must have really been locked up in the closet for quite some time Mario.
The 360 cid motor was avalible with the Quad cab and club cab R/T's.
I've always wanted a quad with the 5.9L motor along with 3.92's, Rino Liner, MagnaFlow Exaust with tublar headers.
Thats the best way to get HP and Toruqe out of you motor jgal,unless you want to add stuff ie cams and other internal parts to your engine.

ive known about the 5.9 but what i was questioning was the 4x4 i thought the durangos only came with a 4x4 5.9.
i thought the dakotas were strictly 2 wheel drive with the 5.9
but as i said i could be and have been wrong before

I thought you could buy a club cab (SLT) with the 5.9L Magnum. Not just the R/T or Quad cab.

and to answer the guys ? about adding power, common mod is viper rockers you can find for about 80 bucks. and everybody on the site has had good expierience with them

well for all the posts that you guys put i came up with nothing thatb acutally helped me...more than one guy( i say this because i am a chick) has tried to tell me what i have for an engine...it's a 5.9lt 360 boys if ya really want to find out come to canada and look for yourselves, i bought it as a private deal, had it in more than one shop that wanted to treat me as an idiot and tell me that it's not what it is...i don't' know what the original owner bought it as. whether is was a custom job or not, but it is an slt with a 5.9, all i want to know is how i can up the horse power without having to get it bored out...i've thought of chips and cold air intake etc...i want more torque and i want more power...give me some idea how i can do this without major mods taking place...i love this truck its the BOMB! i can take over more trucks than can beat me but i want more!up up up boys....give a girl a chance to kick your arse, lol

JGAL, some of the guys are helping you. You are ignoring and denying the advice about the viper rockers. Despite some of the confused idiots, it has also been noted that QC trucks came with the 5.9 for a while after the intro of the 4.7. Looks like you are no better than some of them.

well sorry JGAL thats right you know everything thats why your asking for help. anywho, i dont have a 5.9 and i have never seen a 4x4 with one so all i did was ask, sorry for impeading on your thread but their was advice given. why dont you stroke it, new rockers, cam, ported and polished heads, alluminum intake, supercharger, turbo,new injectors,4.10 rear end, free flowing exhaust,but then we have to ask how much money you have. because these things arnt cheap. im not trying to TELL you that you were wrong i was just saying i havent seen it before. if you would have said it was a custom job or not the story might have been different.

Well if you really want a little added up in the HP/TQ category. Then add a chip such as the ones from superchip, depending on what you axel ratio is I assume you got 3.92's. right?
Also, since you got a A-518 with higher 1st gear than one with a more modern transmission. Don't expect to fell all the added power just starting off. But its no big deal, you're fell more of an improvement as the truck keeps up shifting.
I don't know what exhaust you got but I've installed Magnaflows on all my trucks and looking for some tubular headers from Magnaflow. Also you don't have to take your catalytic converter off; because you get a converter with you performance exhaust package.
