Subject: How full do you fill your transmission?

Message:
I have an 01 Daokta RC V6 Auto.

If the fluid level (warm) is to the top of the K, where the dispstick says OK, I get slight bubbling. Further, sometimes, the truck feels like it drops into gear when I accelerate at a stop sign, however the feeling is very very slight. If the fluid (warm) is at the bottom of the "O" where OK is indicated there does not seem to be any bubbling and the transmission feels like it shifts smoother.

So, for all intents and purposes, the bottom 1/8 of the checkered area on the dipstick has more desirable results than if the transmission is filled to the middle of the checkered area. I had my transmission rebuilt 25,000 miles ago, so as far as I know it is fine.

It seems odd that if the transmission fluid is filled to the middle of the checkered area on the dipstick that the fluid would expand enough to over fill it, thus causing bubbling-assuming that's the cause of the bubbling; and when the fluid is at the bottom 1/8 of the dipstick the fluid does not bubble and the transmission seems to perform better. Both levels are within the operating parameters.

So the Question remains. When warm, where is your fluid level on your Dakota's transmission.

You fill it through the dipstick usually

Where you checking the fluid in Park or Neutral?

As far as I know it shouldn't be bubbling at all, just make sure the fluid hasn't been overheating, and it probably couldn't hurt to change the fluid and filter if you haven't already since the rebuild.

Just my two cents,

HavenX, if its over filled it can sort of bubble, actually its getting air into the oil and it can cause the problems you have stated because when the air hits the oil pump the pressure drops some. I would suggest if it works best at the middle of the checkered part of the dipstick thats where I would leave it, if it is over that drain some out through the fill tube. One more thing always check it after the trans gets hot, cause the fluid can expand quite a bit.
Good Luck

Well, the bottom 1/8 of the checkered marks is where it works best. I wonder if maybe the filter is not on correctly. The guy that rebuilt my transmission was fired a few days later. I suppose that might cause it to bubble some.

I've noticed some bubbles on my dip stick when I check my ATF fluid. But my oil pressure has ran high.

I think that's what I am going to do as soon as I can. I have never been completely satisfied with the rebuild anyway. It's probably a good thing I don't drive my pu hard.

Official shop service manual has a graph of level vs temperature in the "Procedure" for checking the trans fluid.

This graph is the complete answer to this question however you need to have a DRB scan tool to check the trans temperature. Without the exact temperature, you can't know what the dipstick show read.
