Subject: Suggestions for New Tires IP: Logged
Message: Does anyone have any suggestions for new tires?
I have the stock Goodyear RT/S Wrangler 31X10.5R15LT tires on right now with 45K on them. The treads are 4 plies, 2 poly 2 steel and the sides 2 plies 2 poly.
I'd like a similar tire, but not the same one. The tires ride nice, but don't grip the road surface for squat in rain. I fishtail like a bass on a hook in the slightest rain. I need to go into 4-wheel to pull away from stops on a hill. Very annoying.
I've heard the BFG tires are great, but 95% of my driving is asphalt, but I need to be ready for snow and ice in the winter. Plus, I don't want to get stuck in the woods hunting by mud, snow or ice.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Message: Tim
I just put on the BFG's A/T KO and so far I really like them. Most of my driving is on road surface as well and I personally feel more grip with them. As far as driving in the rain, tis the season here in Seattle (so far so good) it almost feels as if im driving on a dry surface. I bought them for snow traction as well going up in the mountains and we'll see how they do then.

Message: Take a close look at the Perrili Scorpions!! They make an AT modle and a MT modle. The BFG's are great off road!!! I ran BFG's for almost 16 years. They tend to cup badly on pavement dureing emergency stops. THey hydro plan on standing water easily as well. They are the best mud, snow, ice, sand and rock tires I have ever used. The Scorpions are not as good off road but they are alot better on pavement. Look at the traction rateing on the side wall. You might also consider sipeing the tires to improve traction and longterm wear!

Message: I use and am happy with Pirelli Scorpion Zeros but then I am never in snow and these aren't rated that good in snow. I would agree with the above that the Pirelli Scorpion AT might be a good match for snow. Snow and mud are similar in traction problems. You want good "paddles" to dig through the stuff but are able to release the stuff as you roll out. Look for a tread design with wide lugs and spaces for snow.

Message: I have been a long time BFG fan but I am completely in love with Pro Comps now. My wofe has the Pro Comp AT's on her 99 4x4 Durango and they are awesome. They have a 50,000 mile tread were warranty and are on eof the few tires that have a severe weather rating. Most truck tires are M&S rated but not severe weather rated. They do great in the snow.

Message: Bought Bridgestone Dueler A/T 13,000 mi ago and have been very happy with them. Highway ride is great. Big O makes an AT with an almost identical tread pattern if you can't find the Bridgestone. Off road and snow traction is good too. I wouldn't tackle deep mud (>8 inches), however.

Message: Okay, I've researched the recommended tires online. I've narrowed it down to the BGF All-Terrain KO's and the Michelin LTX M/S.
I'm most concerned about fishtailing in wet weather. Both tires seem to be a good fit.
The Pro Comps are amazing. I'd buy them if I lived in the middle of nowhere or on the beach. I wish I had a reason to get a set.
I'm going out tonight to see the two choices in person. I'll post after I see them both.
Thanks for the suggestions. Please keep them coming.

Message: Tim, were you looking at the Pro Comp AT's? Reason I ask is because the BFG's are more of a middle of no where tire than they are. The BFG's are a bit more aggressive. The Pro Comp AT's are a tad more street mannered. Just curious. I love the BFG's as well as I have ran them for years up until a couple of months ago.

Message: I just got back from one tire dealer today. The BFGs were selling for $112.99 and the Michelin's for $121.99.
Since most of my driving is street driving, I'm leaning more toward the Michelins. Plus, you get a free pair of Motorola walkie talkies if you buy them before Oct. 31. How's that for incentive!
The sales guy (no flames about sales people, please) said the Michelins were better in rain than the BFGs. After looking at the treads the difference is apparent.
If I drove in more mud and snow, I'd either get the BFGs or the Pros. I love them Pros, but it would be a waste to drive them on asphalt. Even the ATs seem to be a bit overkill.
Once I get that 120-acre plot of land in Upstate New York, I'll let the wife drive down the paved driveway, and me, my Dakota and the Pros will take the "short-cut" through the woods.
Thanks for the feedback!

Message: Like I said, they have a 50,000 mile tread wear warranty on the street and are probably the best wet weather tire I have driven in a long time. Just didnt want you to miss anything. Good luck with whichever you choose and let us know how they turn out. (Again this is the AT's on our Durango not the XT's that are on my truck Although they are great too)

Message: I went out last Friday and got the Michelin LTX A/T's. I got them at the local BJ's for $127.99 a piece.
BJ's will mount and balance the tires for $9.95 a tire. For the lifetime of the tires they will balance and rotate for free. Can't beat that!
The topper was the free stuff offered with the purchase. BJ's gave me a $50 gift certificate and Michelin gave me two of those Motorola walkie talkies. Those will come in handy during hunting season.
Thanks for all the info!

Message: I have a 99 Dakota and have the factory issue tires on it. I need to buy tires this week and would appreciate any suggestions. I live in Texas where the streets are bad and have a problem with traction on wet pavement. Also what ply is best, 6, 8 or 10.

Message: I got the Michelin LTX A/T's. I am very happy
with them so far. I slide a little on wet
pavement, but for the most part they're great.
The Michelin LTX M/S are better on wet
pavement, or at least that's what their
brochure says.
Good luck!

Message: Tim, I bought the Perrili Scorpions ATs and they are awesome. Looks blow away the BFGs, ride is much better than Orig Goodyear Wranglers and traction is great in rain or snow (Of course I had the Goodyears before). I went with the 32X11.5 - 15" on stock rims - no problem. Nice plus is the price - $104 ea

Message: Asking which tires are the best is a very vague question. You need to determine what your most important needs are. After selling tires for the last fifteen or so years I have came up with my own personal favorites. For everyday use and occasional off roading I would agree with some other responses by saying the Michelin LTX MS is the best. They wear like iron, very quiet and have good rain traction due to full tread depth siping. For more serious off roading the LTX AT would be a good choice. Remember that you get what you pay for with tires. The words cheap and good do not belong togehter when it comes to new rubber. I managed the tire department at Sams Club for five years and nobody ever returned the michelins because they were not satisfied with them. Also if you buy them at Sams,BJ'S or Costco the installation price includes a free road hazard warranty. We at Sams were extremely generous in replacing tires due to road hazards. Good luck.

Message: Per Black Magic's question, I too am looking at new tires for my Dakota. From the helpful discussion board, I see that the Michelin LTX M/S seem to be the tire for me, i.e. traction, long life, ect. However, since my Dakota is only a 2 wheel drive model, V6, I was wondering if I can go larger then just 235s? I bought the truck used, 99, extended cab, so, even though a 4 wheel drive was desireable, you can not pass up a turck that is a good deal and well cared for. Therefore, I am just looking for a little more traction when it snows, rains, all that fun weather stuff.
Thank you in advance,
John
BTW... I love the turck!
