Hi,

Issue #1

I have a 2005 Dodge Dakota SLT and I replaced the radio with a 2006 version of the "REF" because it has the "aux" input in it. The new radio would loose the time a couple times a week so I replaced it with a different one and that one does the same thing. It seems to happen when the truck has been sitting for a few days or when I use a different key/fob. I had the battery tested out and it checked out fine. Any Ideas?

Issue #2

I replaced the original factory speakers due to the fact I had blown one. I replaced them with infinity Kappa 652.9i 6 3/4" speakers. They have awesome highs but absolutely no bass. The factory speakers had very good bass and crappy highs. Am I better off just replacing the Infinity's with some cheap pioneers or do you think a new head unit would correct this lack of bass problem. I don't want any fancy amps/subs, I just want a decent sounding radio/speakers. Thank you for your help!

It sounds like there is a problem with the continuous 12 volts to the radio. With it losing memory after sitting a few days it sounds like something is wrong in the IOD circuit if your truck has it. I'm not familiar enough with the 05's to know for sure. It could also be a loose pin for the B+ wire in the radio plug and it could also be a bad ground at the radio. I guess you would have to wait till it loses memory again then pull the radio and test for voltage on the B+ lead and check the grounds. You could also pull the IOD fuse and be sure there is no corrosion or maybe try to check the wiring back from the fuse box on that circuit. It could even be a bad Central Timer Module causing the problem. The dealer can test the CTM with the DRB scan tool. This sounds like there is a definite problem in the IOD or memory circuit in the truck. You could probably fix it by cutting the B+ wire at the radio and connecting it to a different source of constant voltage, such as at the ignition switch harness, lighter, or at the positive battery post. You would need to fuse the wire at the connection point though, for safety. You could also ground the case of the radio to a good solid clean ground, a good spot is in either one of the kick panels. Run the wire down and make the ground connection under an existing bolt or nut. Ground screws you drill in yourself tend to loosen over time.

The lack of bass response may be caused by the speakers being wired out of phase. That is to say, the positive and negative speaker leads are on the wrong terminals at the speaker. Try switching the balance on the radio all the way to one side and then the other. If you have a good improvement in bass with only one side playing at a time, the speakers are definitely wired out of phase. Simple enough to fix, just reverse the connections at each speaker.

Good luck with it.

Jimmy

Hi Jimmy,

Thank you for your help. I actually had a good amount of corrision around the battery terminals, so I cleaned those up and it has been fine for the last couple days so hopefully that fixed the issue. I have double checked the polarity of the speaker connections and they are in proper phase. I ended up checking the polarity out after a few days just to make sure and it was good. I think I will get a new head unit in the future because I want one with a USB, so I will see what that does.

Hey Jimmy9190, that's a very good post. I have 5 Freightliner trucks and the one I drive had a speaker blow out so I put a new set in and it sounded horrible, after I read your post I tried checking the wires at the speakers and sure enough, I had one correct, and the other was backwards, sounds much better now. Thank you sir.
