Subject: SLT vs. Sport IP: Logged
Message: Hey all, just a few questions that have been on my mind. Other than exterior looks (grille, bumpers, decals), whats the difference between the Sports and the SLTs? I am looking to buy a Dak real soon (98 or 99, 2000 if the price is right) and I really like the look of the SLTs, but I have encountered many a Sport (2000 model year) that are in my range, but the SLTs of the same year are much more expensive. Why are the SLTs so much more expensive? I doubt that the grille and bumpers really make the difference in price, but I may be wrong? Anyone have any thoughts as to why the SLT is so much more $$? And whats different between the two packages? Thanks in advance!
Dan
P.S. Out of curiosity, is it feasible to take a Sport and make it look like an SLT with factory aftermarket grille and bumpers? or is the cost not worth it? Thanks again.

Message: Hey Warden,
I thought the same thing about the SLT I loved the look of the chrome but didn't like the price and the fact that the lower part of the front and rear were not painted. So I ordered a sport. I got a 2000 4.7 5 speed Club Cap power everything no diferent than the SLT but I didn't want the overhead computer (waste of money). then I went out and bought a chrome grille and bumpers. Total cost of the truck was 20,600 sticker price. The total of the change over to chrome was around 300.00 then I sold the factory bumpers abd grille on e-bay and made all of my money back. Click on the link below to see photos of the transformation. E-mail me if you want the info on how to get the bumpers and grille.

Message: When I was looking, I really didn't find any difference in price between the SLT and the Sport. In fact, pricing brand new Dakotas, the most expensive was a loaded red Sport. I bought a 98 Sport last year, because that was best deal I could negotiate. In fact, there was the exact pickup with the SLT trim up the street that had the same asking price on it. I am talking about 4x4, the 2x4's may be different. If you are buying used, I would say hang in there. The SLTs are out there and after negotiating, the price difference between the two shouldn't be a factor.

Message: When I bought my SPORT new in 98 they had a promotion going for most of the year where the SPORT package was free. (I would have bought it anyway) So this means in reality the SLT was much more expensive (and rarer).

Message: The differences between SLT and Sport packages are minor...it is possible to equip a sport exactly the same as an SLT, except for the chrome and the availability of 2-tone paint on the SLT. It comes down to a matter of preferring one look over the other. For a complete rundown, see the following address:

Message: The difference in price that I found when I factory ordered was the SLT was $1500 CDN more than the Sport and all you get is chrome bumpers, trim etc. SLT badges and engine hood liner. That's it! Stick with the Sport model you will save yourself $1000 US easy .......... unless you like chrome.

Message: Hello, I recently bought my new 2001 Dodge Dakota 4X4(AWD) SLT Club cab 4.7 V8 Automatic, two tone (black and silver) and I love it much more than the Sports. I found that the options my Dakota SLT came with were far more than the sports. But the price at $22,250 was not that overly expensive. My SLT came almost fully loaded minus (Leather,Power Seats,CD changer) But it did come with alot of extras like Bigger Tires/Wheels heavy duty towing package, SLT PLUS package, Bigger battery and Alternator, Overhead computer, Heavy duty suspension. I used to hate the look of the SLT over the Sport but when I saw my truck at the dealership and the price in the window I knew that I had to have it.

Message: The SLT and the Sport a few different packages specific to each model, but in the end you could get a Sport equiped exactly as a SLT except for two tone paint, chrome bumber/grill, and some badges. With the SLT you can get a few more colors to choose from also. FYI, all this info is going off the 2001 models. I just liked the look of the Sports, but saw a SLT that had some options I wanted. Dealer said no problem, just order what you want. So I did. The only option I don't have is leather seats.

You're all forgetting about the extra layer of sound deadening material under the carpeting. It's part of the SLT packages. Not found on the Sport models. Also, check under the hood...the SLT comes with a hood liner and a light and the sport doesn't. (At least that's how they were from '97 -'98.)

I ordered my truck (is there another way?)
in Jan 2001, and I santed two tone paint, white over silver. Trailer towing, etc. etc. and I wanted the little driving lights.
They said 'NO Way', you can't have driving lights and two tone paint. WTF? I'll may add the PIAA's, already got a good webstie for the install.
I liked that one also, the chrome has less drag than the painted ones.
