Subject: leaking power steering fluid IP: Logged
Message: i have an '00 sport 4x4 and it leaks power steering fluid pretty badly. i don't drive it regularly, but i have to refill the reservoir after about 100 miles of city driving.
the truck has almost always had a problem with the steering being sluggish when it sits overnight during the winter, but its only gotten bad since the leak started about 2 years ago (again, i don't drive it regularly, so adding a little fluid now and then hasn't been a big deal.)
i haven't dug through the truck yet to find where the leak is, but i was wondering if anyone else had experienced something similar. if its something more serious than the pump or cable, i'm inclined to just leave it unrepaired.
thanks for your help!

Message: I had the same problem - it was leaking from the power steering gearbox. Not sure if this is a weak spot on our dakotas but that's what happened to me...I put some lucas stop leak in it and it stopped it almost right away

Message: I've heard and seen a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) about this leak shorting out the O2 sensor near it, which gives you Mil lights, worse MPG, etc.
Good luck
Drive it like its paid for!

Message: todd, the leak you're talking about is the pressure sensor on the high pressure side of the power steering pump.

Message: HMMM my dads pick-up has about the same problem but the leak isn't as bad. I would get it fixed because your shure don't want it to go dry.

Message: one last thing... is the high pressure sensor a piece i can replace or do i need to replace the entire pump? i can't take it off right now (my other car is having brake issues so i'm driving the truck) but i just want to know what to be prepared to purchase. thanks!
i did look at the leak and it does appear to be starting up at the pump, so i expect that you guys are right on the diagnosis.

Message: you can replace just the switch. if you let it go too far it will run fluid down the harness to the O2 sensor connector and trip a MIL for a bad O2 sensor.

Message: i can't find a good diagram anywhere, but i assume that once i remove the pump, the sensor will be obvious? i can't seem to find anything on the outside of the pump that i can just replace. the chilton's manual isn't any help on this, sadly.
