Subject: Exhaust Question IP: Logged
Message: I have had my v6 95 dakota since new, It has a few problems but mechanically it is fine. Recently the muffler started rusting out. I dont mind as its not too loud so I figured I wouldnt worry about it. A friend told me that the holes in my muffler reduce the back pressure and can lead to engine problems if I dont get it fixed. Apparently dogdge motors have especially high pressure so this is a frequent problem? Anybody

Message: You seem to be misunderstanding backpressure. Your claim that Dodge motors have especially high pressure is unfounded. Engines don't require backpressure - but something related, exhaust gas velocity for scavaging at the exhaust valve is important for low end torque. This applies to all brands. Exhaust gas exiting under the vehicle is very corrosive and can lead to rust and dry rot problems.
