I'm going to have a new transmission installed. I was thinking that I should go with something like the 44RH, its got a 46RH, problem with the 46 is that there's to many flaws.

What do you think?

if i'm not mistaken they are basically the same except with the addition of a couple extra clutches in the 46RH.

About, I think there both would be labeled as a 518. But I think its built to hold up and the gear ratios are more suitable for a smaller V8.

I would go with Jasper on that one. If your swaping a 46RH for a 44HR I really don't think it should matter that much.

But check with a transmission expert.

The 44 has a slightly lower torque-handling capacity. Go with the 46 (formerly known as the A518). It's bigger and heavier. Add a TransGo kit to address from-the-factory flaws. Better yet, choke out the extra green up front and get a properly built 46 and it'll probably be the last one you ever have to buy. The 44 is essentially a 42 (A500) with a couple extra clutches, used in Jeeps, usually with V8's.

rebuilt tranny and there is NOT a person out there

Thanks Radio man, I'm shure I could use some look and prayers in order to fix this truck up enough to trade it off.

I'm looking a 2000 SLT plus club cab but now I got a 04 modle in my sights. Both are 4x4's (don't know what gears it would have but I'm wishing for 3.92's) and they also include the 287 magnum motor.

gen1dak

The only reason I dislike even a good working 46 or 518 transmission is the gears just arn't good for a 4x4 truck.

I seem to like the 545 RFE trannys because you don't run so fast going down a hill (3.00:1 VS 2.45:1)

I got a 44Re in my '96 and so far so good. But why would you want a smaller transmission? I would go out to a junk yard and look for junked Dakota with a A518 and have it rebuilt.

But if you're truck is worn out then your right. Just do trade in.

Well, probably you can trade it off for something like a 01 or 03 Dakota, the 545 RFE is a great transmission.

If you can get your rebuilt, its possible that you can change your 1st and 2nd gear's from (2.45,1.64) (3.02,1.67) again this is just an example but check that out if you happen to have a junk yard trans rebuilt.

Yes, but isn't that just a modified 518? Seems like there a 618 has well (48RE?)

Again my problem with these old tourqe flight based transmissions is there gears are just to high for a smaller engine like my 318 for example. I mean if your going to pull your boat off or a ramp, you want something a litter shorter than a 2.45:1.

I rather start out in 3.02:1 frist,1.75:1 second,1.00:1 3rd .70:1 O/D or 4th.

The 46rh is installed in the V8 daks while the 42Rh is installed in the V6 daks. Larry from J and J Auto on the v6 board can answer any question about these trannies, he has rebuilt many of them. He will only post on the v6 board.

OK, so the gears are a bit stiff, but don't 4x4's have a low range you can drop down to and pull houses off foundations?

My dakota does have a NP 231 HD transfercase, and yes it does have a low range for crawling out of a ditch like a did a few years back lol.

But you don't want to use it when you don't have to and when you towing you want a transmission that can start out in gears that are less strain on the motor.

Of course pulling a boat up/down on a concreate/assphalt boat ramp in 4x4 low is not a good idea.

So I like transmission with shorter starting gears.

Just strikes me kinda funny. The 518/46 series has the same front three as the 727 and it didn't seem to be too much of a strain on the engines it backed up for the nearly 30 years it was in frontline service. That's full size trucks, Hemi Cars, 318-powered everything when not running a 904, Vans, Ramchargers (remember, much of that was in the anemic 1970's). But hey, to each his own, right? Ultimately, you're the one driving it.

Seems like the 318 had up to 260 Hp back in the days. Of course I know that most was 230HP just like the last Gen 318 was.

But the transmission (727 or 36RE) was really no problem for a car with a smaller motor. Seems like the 318 had a 904 back when you could only get a 3 speed.

The 904 was introduced for Slant 6 engines. The gear ratios were more favorable for the lower power engines. Naturally, they did go into light-duty 318 packages, but the heavy-duty (work truck 3/4 ton and 1-ton, Ramchargers, Vans) 318 packages still got the 727. Big, heavy vehicles, no aerodynamics, towing....you get the idea.
The 230HP (gross) number was what they were rated early on before all the air pumps and cat converters were added, plus reduced compression ratios of the 70's. Also, that gross HP number represented more like 175HP the way they're rated today, and, as mentioned, they went down from there. There was a long stretch where the 318 barely choked out 140 net HP.

Just a bit of trivia, the hottest Mopar factory 318 was an old big block 318 that was in the '58 Fury. While it pre-dated the LA smallblock by a decade, it did share the same 3.91/3.31 bore/stroke. Dual quad carbs, hot cam, etc. and rated at 290HP. Only a short-lived 350 (yes, 350) was a slightly hotter option that year.
