Subject: Wrecked - AWD question IP: Logged
Message: My beloved '03 Crew cab (4 Dr.), 4WD was in an accident. Caught the entire passenger side and and punctured the rear tire (unrepairable).
Since this is an All Wheel Drive, I'm concerned about replacing the one tire. From my understanding of the mechanics of the AWD (very limited knowledge) any difference in tire size could cause significant wear on the transmission or transfer case.
Is it necessary to replace all 4 tires? Or can I get something with similar tread wear and be OK?
Thanks for your anticipated reply.

Message: By the way..should clarify. The truck is repairable, but the tire is not.

Message: First of all do you have after market wheels and tires( like swamp tires ) or are they basically factory.
If factory, I don't think replacing one tire alone would cause any damage. But note: I don't have much knowledge on AWD systems either. Just my opinion.
If anything, I would think the rear differential would be working harder to compensate for the difference in diam. between left and right wheels, If there is a big difference in the tire diam.

Message: Thanks Alex. The tires are closer to factory, no heavy tread. I'm just not sure if replacing the one tire is an issue or not.
I've read some information on the AWD and I remember reading that different tire sizes can be an issue. Can't find the post now, but I know I've seen it.

Message: If I understand your question correctly, you're concerned about have 3 used tires and 1 new tire of the same branded size. The difference in circumference between them is minimal and will not be a problem. The all wheel drive system has enough play in it to allow for different rotational speeds when turning and such. I doubt the slight difference in tire circumference wont exceed that play.

Message: All wheel drive implies the full time system; while the part time system is called four wheel drive. I know Jeep quadratracs and chevy AWD minivans both have a bad reputation for being touchy about that, but haven't heard that about the Dakotas - despite being on this site for many years. So while I'm not sure, I'd suspect Dakotas are less sensitive or we'd have seen it posted.

Yes, it's AWD. In other words, my 4WD switch inside doesn't have a 2WD option. It's either AWD, 4HI or 4LO.
I didn't think the tire size could make much difference, but I know I read somewhere that it might. So I appreciate your responses. I'm more comfortable replacing only the one tire now.
Thanks!

Message: Well who wants a full-time AWD?? I had a friend with a Chevy Silverado SS with full-time AWD and it just got around 12MPG. But again it's a sports truck thats was meant for streat raceing or should I say the drag strip.
I think your just wasteing money with that.

Message: If the other three are 85% or better, then 1 new tire will not affect it enough to hurt your diffs(including the one in the t-case). If you're getting down to 50%, you should be looking at getting new tires anyway.
BUT! If it's the other guys fault, let insurance pay for the new tires, and be sure to tell them that they can't just pay for one tire.

Message: Thanks again for the replies.
The AWD drive feature has been very nice this winter. From November, through most of February, the streets in the city were snow packed or ice covered. The AWD gets very good traction. If I lived in Southern California...it might be a waste of money. But where I live, it's been nice.
The gas mileage is poor. 12-16 tops. It's not ideal. But I do love the truck in every other regard. Powerful. throaty, V-8, 4 doors with a fair amount of room in the back. Works for me.
The accident was the other guys fault. The tires have around 75% left. I did not get a rental, even tough it will likely be 3-4 weeks before it's repaired. I took my summer vehicle out of storage instead. So maybe I have some bargaining room for some tires?
