Subject: Steering rack or pump going bad? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2004 QC 2WD and lately the steering has been stiff when I first start the truck. After about 5-6 miles of driving around the steering loosens up back to normal. Is this a sign of the steering rack going bad or the pump? There aren't any odd noises coming from either and the serpentine belt appears to be ok. The temperature outside has been in the 20-40 degree range. Any suggestions?
Thanks

Message: Not sure if you resolved the problem already, but I had a similar problem over a year ago and it was discovered that the universal joint in the steering column was nearly seized up.
Before replacing the joint they replaced the steering rack and then the pump.
Lucky for me it was still under warranty.

Message: Yes, the issue is resolved and it was the universal joint! I now spray that joint with lube everytime I lift the hood. Thanks for your response.
