 Subject: 98 Tranny Problems

I have a 98 Dakota Sport 4x2 Club Cab. The transmission seems to hold second gear to very high revs before shifting into 3rd with a pretty good jump. Seems to only exist between 2nd and 3rd at about 50 KM/H, the engine has a very deep rev and hits around 3000 RPM before shifting. I have not had the truck very long so have not done any tranny maintenance. It has 166000 K on it. I checked the fluid level and it is fine, fluid is very clean. What could be causing this issue?
