Subject: 4.7 idle problem

Message:
I have an 00 4.7 with 110500 miles on it. When the truck is in park or neutral sometimes the engine rev's itself. Jumping from 600 to 1800 rpms. It continues to fluxuate for a little while then USUALLY goes back down and idles at 600. If i play with the throttle i can usually get it to stop. i'm thinking it's the PCM. any thoughts?

PCM, never heard that.

I've always heard the TPS sensor. MUCH less $$. Search for it or other2 will add to this.

Drive it like its paid for!

shouldn't i get a CEL if the TPS was faulty? and ive read that people have had this same problem but while the truck was in drive and moving. i only have this problem when it's in park or sometimes neutral

"shouldn't i get a CEL if the TPS was faulty?" not necessarily. different parameters have to be met or not met a certain number of times in a certain timeframe to trip the CEL. i am not sure of the particulars though. maybe we have a dodge tech around here that would know.

you could check the TPS yourself with a VOM(volt/ohm meter).

what should the volt meter read?

with the key "on" truck "not" running, backprobe the center wire with the positive lead and ground the negative. @ idle it should read between .55vdc and .75vdc. now open the throttle all the way, reading should be between 3.4vdc and 4.5vdc. now release the throttle and you should get the exact same reading as you did @ idle earlier. if not change the TPS. also when opening the throttle, watch for any big jumps in voltage. it should be smooth and steady readings all the way to W.O.T.

Jesse, if mine were doing what your's is, here is what I would do:

- clean the throttle body (search for good instructions on this board, it's there somewhere...)
- clean the IAC (idle air controller), part of cleaning the TB, but if not done there, do it here. Be careful not to twist or push the plunger too much when cleaning.
- if the above do not fix it, replace the IAC and/or the TPS
- if still not fixed, check for a vacuum leak somewhere

Rod...
