Subject: 7 pin trailer harness IP: Logged
Message: My `95 Dak did not come with any tow features (trans cooler, wiring, shocks, etc.). I currently have a 'plug-n-play' 4 wire installed and I would like to upgrade the trailer wiring harness system...to a round, 7 pin connecter (paddle type pins) so I can pull the tandem axle trailer (w/ electric brakes) I just bought. Has anyone found/ installed a 'plug and play' 7 wire for a GEN II? I am seeing them online, only for GEN IIIs. Thanks in advance.

Message: I put one on my 96 Dak quite a few years ago.
If I recall, it just splices into the wiring for the rear lights with those snap-shut type connectors.

Message: As my truck is later gen and came with the factory tow package, the only help I have for you is to advise you not to take Rick's advice. A seven pin connector also has a charging circuit and a circuit for a brake controler - which you will also need. None of that is available by splicing into the rear lights.

Message: I agree.
I didn't use the brake function on my setup.
Probably best to talk to a travel trailer dealer to see what is available.
I also had a Suburban with the whole setup and it had an auto braking system along with a manual lever to apply only the trailer brakes alone.

including brake controllers.

Message: I have ordered a 7 pin (supposed 'plug-n-play') harness for $110 w/ shipping from Just for Jeeps.com. They were $17 cheaper than MoparDodge.com and $19 cheaper than the 'stealership'. It has built in running light relays also. Will wait until I install it before I tackle the brake controller. Thanks for the inputs!

Message: I ordered the factory harness for my '05 and it was plug and play with the exception of a splice I had to make into the harness that was behind my front left mud flap. The wire on the trailer harness was like 14ga. and the wire I had to splice it to in the truck harness was like 18 ga. A real pain in the $#%. I still haven't pulled my brake controller wire through my firewall yet either because either the weather has been crap or else I haven't had the time.

Message: other bill,
Sounds like you're pulling a fairly beefy trailer, if it has trailer brakes.
Assuming you have an auto tranny, you're going to slowly, or maybe sooner, burn up the tranny, seals, etc., without the aid of a tranny cooler.
The towing pack also came with a higher output alternator, and larger battery, etc.
With a few mods, you'll probably be fine, but they don't do the tranny cooler for nothing. The alternator and battery are not a must, but I'll bet the tranny cooler is. You have the 4.7, or 5.2/5.9?

Message: Sorry, I didn't look back at the original post and thought it had said 99. IN 99 or was it 2000, if you got a 4x4, it had a 5.2, but the 2x4 had a 4.7.

Message: AC also came with the larger alt, bat and cooling.
Add the trans cooler and all is ok.

Message: Todd - I belive '00 was the first year for the 4.7 in a Dodge, for both 4x4 and 2x4 models. My truck was the first year it was offered in a Dodge. It was available earlier in the Jeep line, maybe that is what you were thinking of.

Message: I think if you just get a manual transmission, it makes things easier to haul. Yesterday I hauled a 12000 pound load no problem! It was a 22 foot trailer tandem axle with a 73 3/4 ton long bed chevy 4x4 on it. Starting out was a little tough but it towed pretty well, not to mention I have the 3.9 liter engine.

Message: Transmissions are personal preference. As long as you don't overheat an auto...and change the fluid/ filter as prescribed, it will not need to be dropped as often as a manual. Slow moving with heavy loads (feathering the clutch) wears out a pressure plate quick.
As far as loads go...You can trailer whatever you want. Growing up on the farm the old adage was that if you had the right sized ball, you could tow it. You simply needed more stopping room.
Just be aware that should you get in an accident and your tow weight exceeds what is on the sticker in the door jam, your insurance doesn't cover you.

Message: I had to end up running a couple wires myself since I did not have a factory plug under the dash. If anyone else cares to know how to do it, below is a link as to how the wires are laid out.
