Message: I have a 92 dak 3.9L auto RWD. Problem is I can shift into all the gears, but it is acting like it isn't registering. I thought of a few things such as the shift linkage or throttle rod....any ideas?

Message: (2000 4.7L V8. Auto) Once upon a time I drove 3 hours to a friend's house in a different city. I pulled in a neighbors driveway to turn around to park on the street. Threw the truck in reverse and... nothing! Shifter moved but no gear changes. Stuck in drive. Shut it down and tried to restart. No go - because it was stuck in drive! (Computer wants you in park or neutral to start.)
Turned out the bumpy roads had finally shaken the link cable loose of the cog / gear on the side of the transmission. In my case, all I had to do was move the column shifter to drive, climb under the driver's side of the truck with a socket wrench and reattach the cable/bracket to the cog/gear on the side of the transmission.
It was the cheapest & easiest car repair of my life and I was elated to find out my transmission was completely fine!
Hope that your problem is similarly simple!

Message: hope in one hand, crap in the other. see which fills up faster. this is why Jason is wondering what he means. I had a car that "acted like it didn't register" in reverse, but the problem was internal in the transmission. it can go either way.

Message: That's true Hope. Thanks for your experience Sam...Jason, "acting like" I shift from Park to reverse, lights come on, to neutral lights go off, to drive, 2nd and 1st and it still acts like it is in neutral/park...don't want to go forward or back. On an update, I changed the filter and I dropped some trans slip/stop leak and 2qts and it seems as if everything is fine. I haven't road tested it yet though...wish me luck!!!

Message: Why is the trans "slip/stop leak" a bad idea? I used ATF+3/4 something that can be used for both...the bottle said ATF+4, but is also used for +3 as well...

Message: throttle rod? LOL
na sounds more like the Johnson rod
2 other things to check are the muffler bearings
and the blinker fluid
however for the muffler bearings you will
need a metric crescent wrench
if you don't have one ask your sales person
at your local Sears or Lowes
