Subject: 03 3.9 occasionally won't start IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys, someone on a motorcycle forum I post on had a question about heir 03 3.9 Dak that occasionally won't start right after being shut off.....any ideas would be appreciated....tks. Here's the post....
"I have an 03 Dodge Dakota, over the last few months sometimes it sounds like its almost not going to start, yet its not consistent. It will happen one day on a warm day in Sept or something and then no on one of these freezing days in Jan. Its only sounded like this probably about 5 or 6 times in total. At first I thought possibly the battery might be going. Now though twice in the last 2 months, about a month apart, I have drove the truck shut it off for 2 seconds and then tried to start it again and its dead. It will turn over but then stalls out, and its not the battery beings jumping it does nothing. In both situations I have left the truck sitting off for about 20 minutes and then try it again and it starts and I can keep on driving it for the rest of the day/night and its fine.
Any ideas of what this could be? I was thinking something with the starter, but I find it strange that it's not on a regular basis..."

Message: Sounds like Vapor Lock. The warm day quick restart is an indicator. Do they live at a higher altitude?
Possibly removed any heat shielding underneath the truck that might be exposing the fuel line to more engine / exhaust system heat? Is the engine running unusually hot for some reason?

Message: Vapor lock is impossible with these fuel injection systems. Sounds like either a leaky injector or a misbehaving TPS. Any fault codes?
