Subject: 99 dakota motor problem IP: Logged
Message: i have a 99 dakota 2wd 3.9v6 i started it two mornings ago to let it warm up. when i went out to get in and drive to work it was overheated. i had just put a new water pump in it two days earlier, and checked it and that wasn't leaking now it won't start and sounds funny when it turns over. i was wondering if maybe my thermostat didn't open causing my motor to overheat. my motor has 170,000 on it and my guess is never had thermostat changed. also wondering if the anti freeze that came out could have got in my distributer and caused it to not start. it is currently 30 below where i live so i know i need to get my truck into a garage and thaw it out. also my heat barley works i think that is a heater core tho, i did buy one a while ago im just trying to build the courage to install it. any ideas would help thanks a lot this site rules

Message: as a rule for me, whenever changing a waterpump i change the tstat also. you never know when one will stick/ fail closed.
no way the antifreeze could have gotten in the dist. as far as your heat barely working, sounds like you need to backflush the heater core. common problem.
