Subject: 03 Dakota overheating. IP: Logged
Message: Hello all, I am new to these boards and have a quick question.
I drive an 03 3.9L v6 dakota 2dr. I have been experiencing random overheating as of late. It happened once or twice before, but now it is becoming more and more frequent. I am located in chicago so it is quite cold right now. I have yet to figure out a pattern of how it is doing it, but im trying. I let my car warm up for 15-20 minutes every morning and first off my heat does not work unless im driving. When i first start driving i notice the temp gauge start to rise quite rapidly almost into the red, but then the heat kicks on and the temp gauge goes back to normal. It will run fine for a while then randomly the temp gauge will rise and the heat will shut off again. then one minute later or so, it will be back to normal. It did this to me 4 times this morning on the way to work (45 min drive). I have no idea what could be causing this. I have no check engine lights or anything like that. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks!

Message: Drakewn is correct. Your thermostat is failing in the closed position. With higher rpms, your water pump is forcing it open, letting water flow temporarily. Need to change it. All it takes is getting hung up in traffic a little too long and it will send it (the temp) over the top.

Message: Shame on me for not asking the obvious 1st. I assumed...and we all know what that does.
Since you added this new information I will ask, did you also check the fluid level in radiator as well?. They don't normally get hot with just the overflow tank empty. The radiator may be low as well.
The good thing is that servicing is cheaper than repairing. If you got it very hot while it was underserviced, watch for leaks now that you have serviced it. Good luck!

Message: Maybe it was low on coolant because of the overheating issue. It may have boiled over? I still say you should replace the thermostat because if there was no coolant, it may have overheated itself and will not work properly anymore.
